Using some GW Technical Primer which I've had around for a little while. I've used it before on something, but the coverage using it now seems to be really poor, very watery, even after 2 coats the piece doesn't look 'primed'.

Anyone had any similar issues/got any advice?

Thanks,

Iain

Advice would be don't use GW primer. The stuff you can get at Wal Mart is actually better than the more expensive stuff.

Citadel makes some good paints, the brush on primer isn't one of them. I have never really liked spray primers so I was willing to try it. It is pretty awful. I use the Vallejo Surface Primer, I think you might like it better. It also is avilable in several colors.

Did you already try stirring it thoroughly?

Didn't stir it, shook it like hell though.

I stirred mine and it still didn't cover – does get into all the nooks and crannies though – is that what its for ?

Yes actually, that is precisely what it's for. I find it easier to just use normal black paint for that however….particularly vallejo black.

The new line of GW paints have really hit and miss QC. I got two of the washes and the white when my local store got their "sample" box. The washes are almost gone from use and still work fine, however the white is almost like thick glue. And I rarely use it so its kept capped up in my box. A friend of mine got the Primer and had the same problem as you did.

I don't have this line of GW paint but I remember previous brush primer releases from them and other hobby paint manufacturers. For whatever reason, primer would separate more than some of the other paints. Shaking would not be enough to mix it thoroughly, it had to be stirred up. (Note I say this about all paints, that shaking doesn't mix as well as stirring, but in this case it's especially true.)

Yours could still have gone bad, but I would try stirring it really really well before deciding that.

FWIW, I've switched to Liquitex acrylic Gesso for brush primer. Hasn't separated so far, hasn't needed to be stirred.
