Haveing moved twice in 6 months, almost all of my referance books are still packed away,so someone help fill in the blanks. The legion adopted french dress for the most part when sent to spain, the shako's haveing the very distinctive sunburst plate.I do not know what book I get this from,,old and faulty memory ,,but I would swear the grenadiers had either bearskins or the french shako's with red plums and cords,,Not czapkas. The grenadiers also had white epaulettes (first time I read this ,I had to double check to make sure I read it right).Look at warlords soon to be released box art work????. As for a standard
(warlord claims the legion did not get standards till 1813
.did they not carry the colors of the older polish legion??? Some one please put some light on this for me. Runicus fasticus |

This is certainly an issue of some debate, but unfortunately I do not know a great deal about the Vistula legion. I do however have two boxes of them, which I was planning on mixing up with some front rank I will follow this thread with interest! F |

The Warlord's offering is bunk. The Vistula wore Polish kurta jackets with the distinctive turnbacks, and French style shakos with sunburst plates. Unless I'm wrong. Warlord claims that they used genuine Polish researchers on their figs. Make of that what you want. |

The book you are thinking of is Martin Windrow & Gerry Embleton "Military dress of the Peninsular War". Plate 24 depicts a grenadier with white epaulettes. Also showing white is the Bellange plate at link Pages 90-91 of Nafziger, Wesolowski & Devoe "Poles & saxons of the Napoleonic Wars". This says grenadiers wore shakos with red "V" side stripes and bands around the crown.; however prior to 1812 they wore bearskins with poppy red cords, plumes & patches. Epaulets were white. Haythornthwaite & Chappell "Uniforms of the Retreat from Moscow" – plate 25 shows the flag of old 1st Polish Legion of the Revolutionary Wars. The Legion did wear shakos with the sunburst plate which bore either the Regimental number or the letter "N". |
