Looking for recommendations of books on the Carolingians – preferably with pretty pictures.

I've done a search on Osprey's site, which I thought the most likely, but could only find Norman and Carolingian Tactics. This may be because they haven't got anything else or it may be a flaw in my searching.

Anyway, any recommendations?

There is another Osprey called The Age of Charlemagne: Warfare in Western Europe, 750-1000 AD (Men-at-arms)

And Carolingian Cavalryman, 768-987 AD (Warrior)

By the way – my EM4 order arrived yesterday – thank-you

I'm reading one at the moment, but its a proper book for grownups – with no pretty pictures.

Early Carolignian Warfare, by Bernard Bachrach (which kind of makes me want to sing something everytime I see his name)

Anyway, its a touch heavy, but has interesting chapters on all the things youwant to see (except uniforms).

I also have a hankering after a second

Empire of the West, Charlemagne and the carolignian empire, Hymell Williams – it looks like it might have some plates in it, but I'd expect they are of the archeological variety.

so you know, there is stuff out there if you look.

@ Mick in Switzerland

They look the kind of thing – I'll order them. glad you got your order OK – nothing to do with me but I'll accept the thanks on behalf of the Despatcher.

@Keraunos
I'll Make it Easy on Myself and get Early Carolingian from the library – I'm Wishin' and Hopin' they'll have it. Otherwise I'll have to Walk on By. Actually, it's not a bad price to buy it so may splash out. At least then, There's Always Something There To Remind Me. grin grin
The Empire of the West isn't on amazon so that may be a library request.

Seriously, thanks for the suggestions..

I've got a used copy of 150, age of Charlemagne, might be an older version but you can have it pro bono,

Cheers

so there you go.

(FWIW, I got my Early Carolignian from OxBow books – it was a impulse purchase, I was so amazed to find the actual warehouse / publishers / "shop" on the street while I was waiting for a connecting train out of Oxford, I felt I had to.

Keraunos – brilliant; I only put in Empire of the West when I searched. There's one there secondhand for only 10 quid including postage so that looks like an investment coming up.

Thanks again (and no corny Burt Bacharach references this time…)

Is a good article on the de re Militari site.
There are also sme useful articles available from old Slingshots.
They have a disk of back numbers available from soa.org.uk

Did Guy Halsall do one. I seem to remember a long series of articles by him in WI years ago. Merovingians were his thing maybe he did later Franks as well.

@Lewisgunner – good thinking; I've got masses of oldish Slingshots in hard copy and on disc.
