…but not at the same time.

Basically I've decided to become a grown up wargamer and embrace Ancients as a period. My interest in pre-1066 history hasn't been great but I've recently become fascinated by the late Roman Republic from Marius to Julius Caesar and would like to build a Roman force to cover that period. On another tangent (for games of SAGA and Pendragon) I want to paint up some Saxons for skirmish gaming.

I was wondering what books there are in print that could give me painting guides for both forces, preferably an Osprey title or something useful for wargamers instead of a standard history book (I have a copy of Tom Holland's Rubicon which I liked). Any help would be appreciated.

Holland's book is great isn't it? I've read a lot on the period and that's one of the better written ones. I'm not sure how much of a painting guide you really need, but there is an Osprey Warrior Roman Legionary 58BC-AD69. Red tunics and pick some shield design transfers from little big men studios and you have about everything you need….

Can't help on the Saxons I'm afraid.

The Osprey are good but there is not one that covers just the period of 110 to 31 BC (Late Republic). The major manufactures of figures made for the period have some of the best images. Also check the Ancient gallery section of TMP. Lots of guys have posted very nice figures for the period.

Not painting Guides as such, but most usefull, try the WRG armies and enemies series
Armies of the Macedonian and Punic Wars,
Armies of the Dark Ages
A littles dated but all useful information.
Armies and Enemies of Imperial Rome Has some usefull stuff about late Republic/early Imperials, and early Saxons.
