I had assumed it was a sequel, not a prequel. Wow, we actually get to see the formation of Section 9! 4 50 minute episodes?!? I wonder how long until we see an English language version. |

Togusa? Is this the fella you mean?

Dan PS. Seems like an interesting show. Might need to check it out. I'm confused as to why they would give Japanese names to characters that don't look all that Japanese. And what's with the abnormally huge eyes and boobs on the girls? |

Yes, that Togusa. Let's see, where to start. You can blame Osama Tezuka link for the large eyes. He was influenced in his early career by Disney Animation (think Betty Boop, Mickey Mouse and Bambi). It makes it easier to express emotion in an animated character. In general Japanese Anime characters are Americans drawn by Japanese and are just assumed as Japanese although they have very little Japanese traits. So Togusa is Japanese, even though he doesn't look it. The Japanese also put English Words smack dab in the middle of a Japanese language pop song. This is considered cool. You could just say "the Japanese are weird," but they've always borrowed heavily from other cultures (an example being 8th Century Chinese theater called Sangaku, which in the 14th Century became Noh and Kyogen). So today the only place to see a form of traditional Chinese theater is in Japan. Their educational system and school uniforms are borrowed from the Germans, and the Imperial Japanese Navy was organized along the lines of the British Royal Navy. A lot of this also has to do with the psychology of the traumatic effect of post-War reconstruction in Japan. As for the big boobs, it's something called Ecchi. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecchi. It goes back a long way in Japan. |
