In 1764, a mysterious and deadly beast began a reign of terror that would not end until 1767. It was called the Beast of Gevaudan. The lethal creature attacked over 200 people and killed over 100.

What do you think?

PS. Seems oddly similar to what was reported in Montana a hundred years later:

I think it's a good possibility, especially considering just how unexpectedly huge matriarch hyenas can be.

I have a memory of reading about a British aristocrat in the C17 who had pets that were described like Hyena.

Perhaps then as now there was a demand for exotic pets and some escaped.

There was one of those "mysterious creatures" shows where a retired NYPD detective decided to delve into this mystery.

In the end he went to a Natural History museum in Paris (forge the name" to which the pelt had been sent after the beast was killed.

They poked around a bit in the files and led him to…a nasty old stuffed hyena.

In "Nosferatu" (1922), Count Orlok's werewolf pal is played by a hyena:

Even in the 1920s, it was pretty unfamiliar; I guess it's plausible that very few a century and a half earlier would recognize it.

Brotherhood of the Wolf is a movie about that very event. Good movie too.

We will not tell you what the beast is in the movie :)

Great movie, especially the first time we meet the heroes.

Of the two beasts killed, one by Mr Antoine (Porte-Arquebuse du Roy) and the other by Jean Chastel, both had the teeth of a dog/wolf type (42 teeth) and not the hyena type (34 teeth)

Nobody knows even today.

Brotherhood of the Wolf is a fun ride. If you have the cash (or a Netflix account), make sure you get the one with the extended/deleted scenes. Has an awesome intro for the two main characters, much better than the one that ended up in the film.

I was under the impression that the beast was a semi-tame 'pet', since one of the survivors described the Beast's tail wagging. Wolves don't do that.

But a big spotted hyena could be the Beast, considering that 'normal' spotted hyenas run ~150lbs, and there are specimens in the 200lb range!

By the way I wrote a modification to LotOW 5 years ago. You can either play the Beast or a group of hunters.

I painted different beasts, a hyena, wolves, a wolverine, a wolf-mastiff hybrid.

Don't blink when Monica Belucci is on screen. Watch it in french if you want to hear the actual voices of the actors.

LOL. Believe me, I won't. :)

SgtPerry – that looks awesome! My French isn't great, but I might be able to read well enough (might have to ask my wife to translate some bits…), and that looks like a great campaign.

Very cool idea, now I'm off to try and find a copy of Vae Victus no.3

Thanks!
