It seems to me that if the attackers put down their ladders and launched straight into the heavily outnumbered defenders on the outside of the hill fort, then they would not have to pick up their ladders again. They would undoubtedly fine the front door key in the back pocket of the big dead French geezer.

Right, just cracked 'ancients' what's next, the Middle Ages? laugh
