Well my wonderful wife wants to get me a
'New Project' for my birthday.
Project will include rules and figs.
So she's asking for suggestions.
She'll be looking in on this thread over the next couple of days.
I'm a lucky man.

A skirmish game of some kind? Or maybe some 1/285 air combat? 100 bucks gets a fair number of 1/72 plastics as well.

Not sure if you would love the 1/72 scale soft plastics. But, you could do Bolt Action and both armies in 1/72 scale for about $100 USD…or less. Even if you went with the more expensive Plastic Soldier Company 1/72 scale, you could get the Germans and Some form of Allies (Russian, US or Commonwealth) for about $20 USD each. Then you could add 2 tanks per side for about $15 USD per side. The rest would be spent on the rules and shipping.

You could do something similar with Saga but would certainly have to go with soft plastics. The rules are about $50. USD then you would need a box of Vikings and a Box of Saxons. Vikings, go with either Emhar or Zvezda. Saxons would be Emhar or Revell.

Command and Colors: Ancients or Napoleonics + 18mm Miniatures to play it as a miniatures game.

or a couple of cracking strategy boardgames:

1) New version of 'Napoleon' by Columbia Games.

2) '1775: Rebellion' by Academy Games

Either of these could be fun projects for adding miniatures, or integrating into a tabletop experience (I use 'Napoleon' as the Campaign, and fight the battles that result on the tabletop.

Sharp Practice AWI. They have a scenario book for Georgia. Plastic Perry British or maybe 15mm.

X-Wing, if you just want a great game and not actually have to do much work for it. (Though you could go all out and try creating a Death Star playing surface with laser towers, or an "out of scale" Star Destroyer as a 3D multi-level playing surface, if you really want to make a "project" of it.)

In the same vein, you could hold out for the new Sails of Glory game coming from Ares.

I've also been tempted by the Dystopian Wars, especially the naval games. Fun game, nice figs, and it certainly has decent project potential— painting, creating island terrain, etc, without being overwhelming.

Of course $100 USD would give you some very nice space fleets from GZG or Studio Bergstrom, in which case you could download G.O.B.S.! and go all out with your own little custom battles. (Shameless plug link: thegobspage.com . See— that gets you started on the project and you haven't spent a dime yet!)

Or, there's my fave of Warmaster/Warmaster Ancients. $100 USD will net you two complete starter armies and some extra units to flesh 'em out. Or go the LotR route, find the Bo5A rules (all you really need are the army lists, spells and magic items list), and build an army or two or three from Copplestone's line of 10mm fantasy. Or maybe Kallistra's. Or even go smaller and delve into Baccus's 6mm ancients!

Dang, I could *so* spend that $100 USD for me… uh, for you. Yeah. For you. Ahem.

DBM or DBMM using 20mm plastic figures ?

You have a lot to learn my friend about wives wanting to buy you gifts. She already KNOWS what SHE wants to get you and believe me, if you haven't picked up on that and say "Oh honey, whater YOU want me to have will be just fine!" then you are backing into a dilemma as bad as the "Honey does this dress still make me look fat?" Question.

Super Dungeon Explore
Why? Because my missus and kids got it for me and we all play it now a then together.Great fun .
Flames of War, Warhammer Fantasy or Warhammer 40K starter sets are good if she wants you out of the way option.
You can still play these together too.

Sajiro09 Apr 2013 6:26 a.m. PST

I'd ask for Quar from Zombiesmith. It's a large range to chose from but they do have starter deals on the website. The PDF rules work great on an iPad and they were inexpensive.

Wings of Glory (WWI) – $100 USD gets you the rules plus a selection of neat biplanes!

COL Scott0again09 Apr 2013 8:02 a.m. PST

Of course the best answer to OSchmidt's rhetorical question is: "Dear you NEVER look fat to me. I am blessed to be married to such a hot chick(momma, tamale, babe, etc) as you."

You might even get that birthday gift upped to $125 USD if she knows how much you appreciate her.

elsyrsyn09 Apr 2013 8:06 a.m. PST

Hard to say, since I have no clue what interests you, but I'd give X-Wing a serious look.

I've been liking WW1 dogfight games lately. Easy enough to find some planes and terrain and rules, all for under $100 USD and kind of a nice "buy once" option.

But then I spend it on sci-fi in 28mm hard plastic because my name is Gabriel and I'm a Sci-Fi Gamer…..

Gabriel Landowski Fezian09 Apr 2013 11:10 a.m. PST

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaait and minute.

She "wants" you to have this stuff?
Something is fishy….

OSchmidt10 Apr 2013 4:12 a.m. PST

Dear Col Scott

Bad answer-- the retorr will be either "OH So you wouldn't recognize if It made me look fat or you just don't care if I look fat and hideous?" If you say "Honey I love you just the way you are!?" It will be "Oh so you like FAT women!" and if you say "Honey you never looked fat!" then you will get "So all these years you've been lying to me! Are you blind!"

When "the fat" question is asked it is best to realize you are doomed. There is only one answer I have thought of that might save you.

"Honey, It's all my fault, I am the reason you are fat, please forgive me." I know it makes no sense, but it does to them. It's better to fall on your sword and die quick than be drawn and quartered slowly. When a woman asks that question she's railing against fate and inevitable march of time. They don't care and she can't do anything to them, but YOU are handy and will do quite well.

! So you no longer care!

Once the "fat"question is uttered it's a death sentence./
