My son was born on Monday and I've been watching my Sharpe DVDs while at the hospital, so my question is are the DVDs a somewhat good painting guide? In a few months I'm going to do some 28mm British; Rifles and Light company troops and my be some French.

I'd say yes. The costumes were designed by Andrew Mollo who is also a military uniform expert and historian as well as a costume designer. The only quibble I have is that Sharpe's Eagle has officers with dark blue tunic linings instead of the yellow facing colours of the regiment depicted but they correct that from Sharpe's Company onwards.

You need to be very careful. Some uniforms seem spot on while others are a bit 'questionable'. Also beware of your dates. The French infantry seem to be wearing a lot of Bardin regulation kit which means a uniform that was not issued until 1812-13 being worn in 1809 and earlier.

The answer of course is to do what I have done with the movie "Barry Lyndon" – base your figures specifically on the movie, not on history:

That way, if there are historical inaccuracies, it doesn't matter, because your figures are aiming to be accurate to the movie, not to history.

And who says that basing your figures on a movie is any less valid than basing them on history?
