Hi-- heading to Germany this summer, and have a 12 year old boy with a strong Roman interest. What sites should we consider visiting? My first thought was the Teutoburg Forest, but I know nothing about the site. I see the Park Kalkriese museum-- is it worth visiting? |

I have not been to Kalkriese yet (shame since I only live 11/2 hours drive from it) But it is supposed to be good. Since it seems like you will be in the area
Go to Xanten. It is a real stonker (especially with you buy the combined ticket that included the Roman baths and museeums a couple 100 away). You can easily spend a day there. Xanten was a large garrison town which held up to three legions. They rebuild parts of the wall, two gatehouses, part of the colluseum, a few ofmthe houses and craft shops. Should, you, happen to be furthermsouth there are a couple smaller museeums strewn alongmthe Limes in Bavaria. IIRC the largest ones are near Ingolstadt. Cheers, Burkhard |

Check out posting on line about the Roman Limes. There are several places that have works reconstructed. But I have to ask with all the castles in Germany will you ever have enough time to focus on Romanish Deutchland? If you get to Kulmbach go see the tin soldier museum inside. Mostly flats but worth a visit. VR James Mattes |

Go to Mainz to the Roman German Museum and the museum of the Roman Rhine Fleet. Well worth it. |

Also try the Trier area for ruins. There is a colliseum, archway (which we could see from our hotel window!) and a palace built for the emperor, which is now a church I believe. |

We'll be staying in Stuttgart, and probably visiting family in Göttingen. Even Kalkriese isn't in the area; I'm just wondering what my options are and what's worth the extra effort. But I have to ask with all the castles in Germany will you ever have enough time to focus on Romanish Deutchland? We've seen castles. In particular, my wife and children spend about a month and a half there every summer, and my son has visited several castles with our family before. He hasn't done anything Roman, though. Go to Mainz to the Roman German Museum and the museum of the Roman Rhine Fleet. Well worth it. Hmm
and Saalburg nearby: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saalburg Plus pre-history stuff, another strong interest of his. And it's practically on the way between Stuttgart and Göttingen
strong candidate! |

The Kalkriese Museum is interesting but in my opinion not so interesting to justify driving there from Göttingen. Every 2 years there is a special event with Roman and German renactant groups that is very worthy to see. The next is scheduled on the 19/20 May 2013. |

Don't forget Switzerland. Augusta Raurica just east of Basel is nice and easily reached from the German side. Closer to Stuttgart than most of the places mentioned above. There are other nice places in Switzerland such as Avenches, but I doubt you want to go that far in. |
