Which should come first after choosing a gaming period: a. painting and basing figures? b. choosing rules and appropriate accessories for them? c. Acquiring / building the game table? d. Getting terrain for the game table? e. a beverage of your choosing? Curiously, Mike |

Definitely the beverage. Only alcohol fuzzes up reality enough for me to commit to yet another period. |

Obviously, selection e is the way to go. That done, I would look into rules so you can decide what sort of troops you need and the optimal basing solution. Then go back to selection e. |

For me it's b. the beverage was there from the beginning. |

A. Without those you won't be able to try rules. |

f Acquiring figures in the first place. |

b. no rules, no game. you can always try with card bases, but not vice versa. and besides, unless you expect rules to conform to your basing and organisational theories, you will just end up needing to make changes or compromises if you complete you figures before deciding on which rules they are to be used for.. |

E came BEFORE choosing a period, so did C, B wins. |

As I presume G is part of "choosing a gaming period," I'll take A. You can always use terrain from other periods, use rules from other periods and use an existing play surface. Painting the figures is essential to this hobby. |

You forgot one - Buying some books to research the period or at least uniform guides for painting references. |

It's really: e – Beverage b – Rules e – Beverage a – Figures e – Beverage e – Beverage e – Beverage (need to lubricate the joints properly after all that painting) c – Table e – Beverage d – Terrain e – Beverage e – Beverage e – Beverage (need to lubricate the joints properly after all that terrain work) |

"You forgot one - Buying some books to research the period or at least uniform guides for painting references." Yep, deffo the way I go. Choose the period, then read up on it. That might also include reading a few rulebooks. Acquisition takes a while as I develop my understanding. Painting takes even longer. and I hate basing. Im still rebasing a load of Naps from years ago
..! So ultimately, it's i before e, except after c,

A comes first. If you don't like the way the figures look you will never get to the rules. |

Have to agree with 1815Guy. I may like the rules and love the figures, but if I have no interest in recreating the period, why would I game it? |

G. History first, then B rules. |
