The Spaceship Gaming board works reasonably well, but in many cases seems to be geared more to fleet or minor squadron actions with larger ships, and/or with these sometimes interacting with smaller fighters.

I think a Space Fighters board would be useful for the tactical end of the spectrum, with combat between small space fighters, and/or unmanned drones.

There are a number of rules systems that cater to these types of battles, and many manufacturers that produce minis for them, so I think it might be a good idea to separate them out.

So, vote below:

1. Yes
2. No

1.yes

As the author of a hopefully-soon-to-be-released set of space fighter rules, I say yes :)

emckinney29 Mar 2013 11:48 p.m. PST

No. Not enough action to justify separating them. Anyhow, I prefer everything in one convenient place to check.

Space Monkey30 Mar 2013 3:27 a.m. PST

No. I like games like Fighter games but I don't see a need to separate them out from the other space combat games.

Spaceship Gaming is not overflowing with traffic that disappears off the screen. I like finding all the spaceships there. One scale's big dreadaughts are another scale's small fighters : 3

No, not enough rule systems or popularity in the miniature gaming world.

Only if we break "bombers", "zeppelins", "scout", and "fighters"

I support anything that adds to the general confusion.

There is that.

This board has been cluttered with enough "space fighter" clap-trap in the form of FFG's X-Wing, that the casual peruser of the boards would think that the Spaceship Wargaming Board is the Starfighter Wargaming Board

Not "No" but "Oh Hell NO!" evil grin wink wink evil grin

"This board has been cluttered with enough "space fighter" clap-trap…"

So you don't like the clutter but you also don't want it to go elsewhere?

vojvoda30 Mar 2013 9:33 a.m. PST

I am happy with the Star Wars board I asked for some time back. I am not really into other genre and what information I want for Star Wars is well covered on that board. So I say no as well.

No, the X-Wing flourish at the moment..and yes I am a contributor to this- sorry!..is a temporary blip I think, as it has recently become very popular.
I am sure the board will become more eclectic again before too long!

Chef Lackey Rich Fezian31 Mar 2013 5:48 a.m. PST

Even if it is permanent, starfighter combat is still part and parcel of spaceship gaming. Just doesn't need a board of its own. This isn't WW2 – the traffic volume isn't high enough to merit splitting.

TheBeast Supporting Member of TMP31 Mar 2013 7:19 a.m. PST

As long as it isn't the graft of rapes…

I'm very undecided about this. I don't go to the Star Wars board, so X-Wing would be an un-blip if not here or on star fighters.

Star fighters tends to be a separate gaming style. I love FASA's old BSG game, but when doing BSG in FT, fighters anonymously die in droves.

On the other, other hand, most of the other systems have fighters in their rules, but of a different flavor. Or so I hope; when they try to focus on same, I think they get out of hand.

As a simple addition? No.

As a reorganization that would remove genre boards? Maybe.

I oft drop in on Ironclads on ACW, but it is NOT just ACW naval and riverine.

Eli Arndt31 Mar 2013 7:41 a.m. PST

No.

I have seen the detrimental effects that more specific boards have on the exchange of ideas. With TMP's new limits on cross-posting it is often impossible to address multiple boards with the same post. Add to this the tendency of redundant posts to get edited to a single board and it becomes an issue.

I see no need. Spaceship gaming doesn't really need to be broken down. The thread titles are typically quite clear as to what level or system a poster is discussing, so if you don't want to read about X-wing or space fighters, skip the thread. As herky-bird points out, the current flurry of X-wing posts is a blip that will dwindle as the game becomes established and common rather than the "big news" of the genre. And as I said, you can ignore X-wing threads easily enough. They tend to be obvious.

BlackWidowPilot Fezian31 Mar 2013 12:35 p.m. PST

As the chief proponent/cheerleader/cult leader of space fighters on TMP, I have to say no. As Parzival so succinctly explained. X-Wing is a current popular trend; it will settle down, While Eli has hit my personal pet concern about the exchange of ideas being as uninhibited as possible while still maintaining some semblance of overall order amongst the TMP fora.

The black window is for girls.! It just some guns flying in loose formation. The t-bird has more flaws than all of my ex-girlfriends combined, but I still love it and it takes skill to get good use out of it.

I wish we had a way to group boards. Then I could put all the sci-fi boards I'm interested in into one pile, one for all fantasy boards, etc. And if people made more boards, I'd decide once whether I wanted that one, and included it in something. I'd prefer to not have to visit so many boards.

What's the word?

John Treadaway01 Apr 2013 6:01 a.m. PST

No, I'm afraid. I want less boards not more. I'd happily go back to a stage of just one SF board and not a 15mm and a 28mm (and now a 6mm) board.

It just means I have to check in thre places rather than one.

It's like me having a seperate (real world) post box for different coloured envelopes (as opposed to white or brown).

I just want to pick it all up from the one board ta muchly.

trynda170103 Apr 2013 6:25 p.m. PST

I think that a seperate board isn't needed. I agree with those that said above that the current popularity of X-Wing is a short term blip.

mdauben04 Apr 2013 9:58 a.m. PST

I'd say no.

There really isn't enough traffic in the current board to break it up into two new ones. Its just not that hard to sort through the new messages and see which ones are of interest to you. Plus, I think there is enough commonality between "fighter" gamers and "capital ship" gamers, that they benefit from sharing space.

SouthernPhantom05 Apr 2013 5:09 a.m. PST

evilleMonkeigh15 May 2013 10:37 p.m. PST

No. TMP is diluted enough as it is. Some topics have been on the front page since 2009.

I've lost interest in TMP as it is hard to comb through 501 sub-boards looking for something new or interesting….
