Meaning those toys, action figures, etc. that are not meant to represent giant monsters/bots but do meet the appropriate size for your gaming. When I pass the dollar store toy section I look at the crap knock offs for that gem that could be repainted or mod'ed into something else. Same thing for the prime selections at MalWart and others. One that has been mocking me to buy it
YouTube link I would/will open the mouth, fuse, and build up the inner details a bit, repaint the mouth section.
Just a funny guy
raawr! The Ben 10 line also provides a bit of potential.
And many many more. So for you
see or pick up anything fun and useful?

Especially if you like a bit of humor in your monsters, which I do appreciate if done well :)

From the dealer booths at Anime Boston, I wasn't able to resist adding some Strike WItch figures for giant flying catgirls. These have proven to be immensely popular figures in the Dai Kaiju : Die Boston games. Everyone always thinks its very appropriate when one of the giant flying catgirls destroys the Hynes Convention Center and Anime Boston along with it!

28mm the top two skylanders you showed are actually $14.99 USD :) I only know because ive purchased EVERY skylander for my eight year old son |

I think Pokemon and Skylanders are great sources of alternate figures for giant monster gaming. -Ken Radioactive Press |

I've got a handful of Final Fantasy figures that have shown up in various games. My favorites are the Iron Giants: link Also those old (but still easy to find) AMT Gigantics kits
spider, scorpion, mantis and wasp make great 50's era mutant critters. I like the Pokemon figures but the're a bit too cute for my tastes in Kaiju. |
28mmMan | 28 Mar 2013 9:56 a.m. PST |
Do you guys usually use the figures as they come or mod them? I mention because some of the cute can be mod/painted out :) And sorry about the skylanders, I just grabbed a couple pics to add to the prior post
$15 is a touch ugly
time to hit the garage sales and find one for a quarter :)
|
Warmaster Horus | 28 Mar 2013 10:59 a.m. PST |
No worries. 28. In your support the $15 USD ones are more in the 4-5 inch range :) But I concur, the skylanders definitely fit the bill for the right blend of campy/cute and monstrous |
28mmMan | 28 Mar 2013 11:13 a.m. PST |
Gotta say in the above post, the jellyfish looks good on the table
not too scary but very cool none the less
shocking touch, poison perhaps, entangling tendrils, slow flight
fast flight would be crazy insane
maybe a burst of speed for a charge attack? We likes it. |
28mmMan | 28 Mar 2013 11:19 a.m. PST |
How about the wildlife series of toys and collectables? Much like the above jellyman. Dino toys
of course. Gorilla figures are a given. Some out if context types like the giant octopus or crab? What have you found that should be noted? The Safari Toy lines are quite good IMO. |
Twig66 | 28 Mar 2013 2:10 p.m. PST |
That jellyfish looks great. I think some of the Ben 10 figures would work in my city too, bottom left in the lineup pic looks just right. Thanks all for the ideas. My most used non-monster monster must be Bender.
Here knocking the giant wooden robot, which I think 28mm Man told me was a Little Big Planet figure, into a single block building and turning it to rubble. Lord Fahl is a 3" South Park figure.
In our games he is a Hindu god type giant monster. |
Space Monkey | 28 Mar 2013 2:36 p.m. PST |
The foam block idea is great! I wonder if that jellyfish would take paint? I'd be tempted to make it a bit more colorful
but I know it's pretty wiggly. |
Twig66 | 28 Mar 2013 3:26 p.m. PST |
Thanks SW, I use the blocks from foam figure trays that normally have no use. I was wondering if the jellyfish would work with a pulsing LED inside it, like from an LED tea light. |
28mmMan | 28 Mar 2013 5:23 p.m. PST |
The foam blocks are just great. I had been thinking back to a great scene that was full of the foam blocks. I suspect they were Twigs! As for the light, check the $1 USD store
they have a dozen different type of LED lights. |
28mmMan | 28 Mar 2013 5:53 p.m. PST |
Twig yes it looks like the Wooden robot from Little Big Planet 2

The Jellyfish is statted out as Dogora for Monster Island rules: link Many Tendrils give 1 additional Strike attack Tendrils: +2 to hit with Grab attack Long Tendrils: any HtH attack up to 4" Range (Target may counterattack) Slippery, +2 to Evade vs. Grab attacks, +2D6 escaping being held 360˚ Sense: no bonus to attack this kaiju from the rear Floating: ground movement ignores low-lying terrain, water, etc. Flying 9" |

a little bit of everything from the natural world as well as prehistoric and even classic fantasy pieces
lots of giant monster potential here! link Some are a bit longer than the common 4". A few of my favorites

Guyvers anyone? If I were to put a Crusader type out on the table it would be a Guyver
I prefer the organic monster types, but Guyver's get my attention :)

Though they may be a little small
anyone have comparison pics? |

Galactic Heroes Rancor anyone?
Uuuuuhhhh never mind
I just looked up the availability and cost
E'freakin egads.
Ok
how about back to my favorite Star Wars to Giant Monster fodder
Hmmm also tough to find at a reasonable price
looks like it is on my conversion radar lol.
:D |

I think they might be a little pricey now, but when the "How to Train Your Dragon" movie came out I bought some of the mini figures (the ones that came with the stand and were attached with a spring) and ran a few demo games using them. -Ken Radioactive Press |

There are several good figures in the Pokemon line and they are small so you don't need a large playing area. With over 500 monsters to make figures for the Pokemon line is a great source for a wide variety of figures if you can get past the cartoonish aspect of many of them. -Ken Radioactive Press |
Thieses | 19 Apr 2013 8:25 a.m. PST |
I think Ken from Radioactive press once posted pics of a bunch of "giant" plastic ants from the dollar spot section of Target. I of course stole this Idea, and bought 20 of them myself. The Target dollar spot has rubber insects/snakes/dinos almost every spring. It is a great resource for Kaiju fodder. |

good times :D |

Reading some Thor comics last night, the Asguardians merged with Thor to form a giant monster; The Asguardian Blood Legion. This got me thinking, anyone use Marvel figures?
Did they make a model of the giant things that attacked Earth or the helicarrier in the Avengers film? |

Has anyone mentioned the M.A.R.S line of figures for giant monster gaming. I saw the robotic and regular motorized dinosaur figures (about 8" tall I think) at Ross. I can't seem to find a pic of them. Toys r Us also has several different figure and monster/dinosaur sets like this: link -Ken Radioactive Press |

Ken yes those are the ants I was talking about. I have a bunch of those bad boys. I went to three different Targets to get them. |
GiantMonster | 24 Apr 2013 12:28 p.m. PST |
I had to go to a few different Targets myself and I couldn't stop with just the ants I also bought the spiders (I used them in an 8-Legged Freaks scenario, the ants of course were used for Them!). -Ken Radioacitve Press |

I have just been looking on google image search for "jelly fishing lure", I think there is potential here.
|
28mmMan | 27 Apr 2013 10:29 a.m. PST |
Hmmm maybe
they are really flexible, you would need to mount them as if flying or floating. How about something in the silicone aquarium genre?
|
Twig66 | 27 Apr 2013 12:13 p.m. PST |
The aquarium piece would make a good spawning ground, very tempting. Without hooks or anything the lures are really cheap. I have ordered some of these;
I think I will push a ball bearing into their heads and they will go on my magnet topped little flight stands. I think they have a hole through them where the ball bearing will go so their legs disguise the stand. I shall report back once they arrive. |
Twig66 | 01 May 2013 7:39 a.m. PST |
An alien race from Neptune; The Lure.
I pushed a bead into their heads (9 orange, 1 black) and put them on a Litko base.
With 3" monsters. |
28mmMan | 01 May 2013 9:35 a.m. PST |
Very clever! Looks good from here. Can you prop up a couple arms for "movement"? |
28mmMan | 01 May 2013 10:30 a.m. PST |
And what is the figure with its back to us in the last pic? |
Twig66 | 01 May 2013 12:09 p.m. PST |
As you said, they are really flexible, but they sort of drape well. You can lift them off the base an inch then put them back down and they balloon out like the ones on the ends in the pictures or tip them and stand them up again for a flowing skirt, moving, kind of look. I call the facing away one an Imperiser Robot. link |
GiantMonster | 01 May 2013 12:16 p.m. PST |
They look awesome Twig66! That central eye looks like it should have the ability to project a deadly beam and the tentacles are there to hold the opponent in place so the beam never misses. -Ken Radioactive Press |
Thieses | 02 May 2013 1:13 p.m. PST |
Twigg66 these "Lures" (great name) are surprisingly very interesting. I like these a lot. They remind me of Viras from the Gamera films. |
