I just picked up the leaflets advising on the new postal rates via Royal Mail that come into effect on 2 April. The weight breaks for ordinary small parcels are up to 1kg and up to 2kg, costing £3.00 GBP and £6.85 GBP respectively. After that they jump to medium parcels, at £15.10 GBP for up to 5kg.

There are new size restrictions too (packets are out, small, medium and large parcels are in). Paint will almost certainly have to go small parcel (most pots can't be squeezed into a 2.5cm deep large letter rate box), so a single pot will cost at least £3.00 GBP on postage.

And that's just ordinary UK standard rate. Recorded is £1.10 GBP more.

International rates have lost the gentle gradations, and go up in 250g chunks, starting at £3.50 GBP to Europe and £4.50 GBP to the US.

And it's not easy to get several well-padded, fragile larger figures into a box that's only 3 inches/8cm deep. They've almost doubled the charge for most of the parcels I'm likely to send.

Sue – there's an exception on the 8cm rule – up to 16 x 16 x 16cm also counts as a small parcel, so I see a lot of 6" cube boxes in my future….

I can't see any referrences to this 8cm exception and it certainly wasn't mentioned to me at the Post Office when I asked about the new costs. Where can I find details of the exception? Can't find it here: PDF link

At the bottom of the brown box on UK parcel sizes; small print starting "Exceptions apply…."

Spotted it, thanks. That will make a difference…..

No problem, and yeah it's a definite help – the short version is that the really big price hikes are 2-5kg, and less than 2kg as well if it's not a "small parcel" so the 16cm cube could be very handy. The minute you go over 2kg it gets painful though.

Thanks Dom, I'd missed that. Small print is not my thing any more. I have three pairs of glasses to do different things nowadays: I am turning into Professor Branestawm…

I converted my packaging methodology to Large Letter at the first big increase so I need to send only a few small parcels a year. I means packing some orders to go in two or three parts but works out cheaper even so.

The 160mm cube Small Parcel is potentially useful to me and I have a pile of boxes bought just before the rise a couple of years ago that have never got used.

Suitable boxes for the new size are readily available and cheap wheras thin boxes for LL tend to be quite expensive.
