The Battle of the Coral Sea: The RAAF Contribution

"The Battle of the Coral Sea (4–8 May 1942) was a pivotal
action in the defence of Australia during the Pacifi c War.
Fought over 1.5 million square kilometres of ocean, it was
the fi rst sea engagement contested principally by opposing
groups of carrier-launched aircraft without the surface fl eets coming within direct sight of each other. The RAAF, while not a large component of the Allied forces engaged at the Coral Sea, nonetheless made important contributions in the lead up to the battle and in shaping the course of the battle itself."

"Two months later, a No 32 Squadron crew located a Japanese aircraft carrier and other warships – information which proved to be of great value to Allied commanders during the Battle of the Coral Sea."

11 Squadron RAAF
"Squadron aircraft continued to carry out bombing attacks against Japanese shipping at Rabaul and other targets on Japanese-occupied islands. With Japanese naval and air attacks on Port Moresby escalating, the squadron withdrew to Bowen in Queensland on 7 May 1942. During the move unit aircraft flew reconnaissance missions for naval vessels engaged in the Battle of the Coral Sea. "
