I've gamed with 15mm since I started into this hobby some years ago but I'm interested in moving into 20mm. While I really looking forward to getting back into painting some miniatures again especially at a more detailed size I'm not so enthused over the idea of painting lots of vehicles. (I'm really happy with how I paint my troops but I don't do well with vehicles at all.)

I've just recently heard that there are quite a few repainted models available in the 1:72 scale but I'm a little concerned that various manufactures may differ in scale to each other.

I'd really appreciate any advise or suggestions on what 20mm figures are best for Normandy and what would you recommend in pre-painted 1:72 vehicles.

Thanks in advance for any advice

John

PS I'm seriously thinking of selling some 28mm if anyone's interested…

I'd like a serious guide to 20mm WWII too please.

I don't think painting 1/72 vehicles is necessarilly terribly hard. I just use a big brush and pre shading.
I prefer rub on transfers to decals since the carrier is way thinner. But not on zimmerit.

I see a dealer at cons (uk) who sells sprayed tanks. Not sure but might be called grubbys. You could just buy a spray can of green and spray yourself though. Or maybe a cheap badger airbrush.
There're also a range I see in modelzone. Forces of valor, maybe. Expensive though.

Don't worry about differences between 1/76 and 1/72, just buy all the same manufacturer for each tank.
And don't buy valiant figures, they're huge.

Frontline are sorta cheap n cheerful if you don't want to build anything and want cheap. Psc look ok but for the odd thing. Schurzen look a bit thick eg. Revell plastic kits are superb if you like modelling. Pz 4h is particularly good.

AB miniatures are the best metal figures.

For all the info you need on 20mm the guild is probably the best forum as it is almost all 20mm guys, loads of stuff out there, almost too many to list, I will of course put myself on the list lancerminiatures.com there is also the easy models which are already nicely painted and of course grubby has his ready painted range.

We have most ranges in the huge gallery, a very knowledgable membership with regards 20mm WW2 and many of the actual makers on the forum.

My first stop is always AB Figures;

But after that I also use Elhiem, Battlefield/Blitz, Wartime, Kellys HEroes, WarModelling, SHQ, Britannia and Sojers. Probably a few others too… Like the Foundry range and Shellhole Scenics.

Loads of WW2 stuff in 20mm…

Aye, the Guild's the place to be.

jacksarge16 Mar 2013 7:39 p.m. PST

Another vote from me for the Guild.
Piers' list is spot on. You can also add TQD Castings from CP Models and don't ignore the plastics like Plastic Soldier Company etc.
Pre-painted AFVs? – try Dragon, Easy Model, Hobby Master, Altaya.
But I'm sure with painting skills that you show in the pictures above, you could manage AFVs. Why not get a cheap fastbuild from Italeri or Armourfast and give it a go?

Thanks to everyone for their compliments, advice and suggestions, sounds like there are lots of options around in 20mm. I've joined "the Guild" and it sure has lots to offer those in the hobby not just in 20mm too…

By the way I've posted the above 28mm on the marketplace…thanks especially to those who have PM'd…I'm be honest I am slightly more interested in 20mm trade in mind…

Thanks again

John

CP Models do some very nicely proportioned & detailed 20mm WWII

Footslogger20 Mar 2013 4:27 a.m. PST

Never heard of CP Models – they look good – how do they compare sizewise to say, AB and SHQ? Do you have experience of ordering from them?

gorgarrak20 Mar 2013 5:33 a.m. PST

CP Models are about right, but the carry a range – TQD Castings, I think thet they are old Elhiem minis and they are very very good but about 1mm taller, about 23mm foot to top of head and provided with a 20mm round slotta-base
I freely mix Elhiem, CP, TQD and Zvezda plastics in the same squad (Soviets) and they look fine

Thank you, that's helpful.

The ranges "Battle for the Edgerows (1944 SS) "and "Red Devils" from Blitz are excellent and at a reasonable price. Now I am painting some figures and they are really recommended. You can find them in battlefieldminiatures.co.uk

Good luck!!

War Panda26 Mar 2013 8:03 p.m. PST

Thanks empecinado…really great looking US airborne minis

For 28s and 15s you have everything available under one roof /site boxed up with a red bow around it ie figures vehicles ,paints ,decals etc. The challenge with 20mm and also the fun is that you will have to research a short list of models from various producers.

However your endeavers will be rewarded as you will probably find with possibley the odd exception at least one example of every vehicle that was used including many rarities in WW2.

My own situation due to lack of time, family commitments etc is that I have stuck with 15s with some regret as I am envious of the better proportioned 20mm figs such as those produced by AB.

Your first stop for Figs IMO should be AB for 20mm :D

What are the best for 20mm early ww2 desert figures (Italian, British, DAK). AB doens't do them (yet?)

PiersBrand07 Oct 2013 6:46 a.m. PST

AB do vehicle and some artillery crews for the Desert War.

Von Miligan07 Oct 2013 7:03 a.m. PST

20mmZone and Early war miniatures do a whole range of early war infantry, Equipment's and vehicles.

Look out for our posts here and on the guild.
We have the most extensive range of miniatures in 20mm for the early period than anyone else. 850 products and some being added every week.

The Plastic Soldier Review site is a great place to check out what's available in 20mm plastics:

But it doesn't include vehicles, just men and a few guns.

brunet08 Oct 2013 1:18 a.m. PST

Von Milligan,
it must be me, but I can't see any desert figures except maybe some Indian troops.
Equipment I have found.
