The problem with a lot of sci-fi designs is the more you follow current convention and physical 'realism' the more it just looks like a slightly different version of an existing modern vehicle. I'd be cautious about adjusting the design to match existing vehicles purely on the basis that the XYZ has a longer nose, flatter chassis, etc. As AB pointed out, if you are drifting into a world where plasma weapons, anti-gravity units and such like are existing then 'realism' is already pretty much out the window and you are limited only by your imagination and design skill – it works because you say it does :-) (says Geoff, who is still scribbling designs for his 'magnatron drive'
