All these topics on favorite ages got me thinking about a project I wanted to do long ago: create Hyborian age armies. Now I know that the Conan craze is passing, but I think the idea has merit. HOTT had listings for armies (does 2nd ed have them?), and Lin Carter put out a wargame called Armies of the Hyborian Age. GURPS even did a RPG spinoff. Some examples of what I worked on: Pictish Army: used Minifigs Amerindians with roaches. Vendhyan Army: Dixon and Two Dragons Indians. Cimmeria: Essex Vikings, with Saxons and Germans thrown in. Stygia: Egyptians, (who else?). Black Kingdoms: Zulus. Of course, there are others, and newer manufacturers out there than when I started. Has anybody else out there done something similar? Comments and suggestions on armies, miniatures and rules would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead of time. |

Hi Richard, I have done a few armies for Conan too. I have armies for: Hyrkania (Mongols) Vendhya (Indians) Aquilonia and other Hyborian Kingdoms (a mix of medieval figures with a bunch of eastern foot/horse archers as mercs) Other suggestions: Shem (Arabs); Turan (Imperial Arabs); Kozaki (early Cossaks); Zingara (Feudal Spanish); Zamora (Granadine); Khitai (any Chinese); Afghulistan (Ghurid) David "The Evil" Brown, The Man behind Evil Gong miniatures, published estensive army lists for his DBFi. You may find them here: link They could be easily fitted to HOTT. Have fun with your Hyborian armies :-) |

I have a copy of Lin Carter's rules--let me know if you have any questions, though the "lists" were extremely simplistic although the descriptions weren't bad. |

2nd edition HOTT does have the Hyborian age army lists. Long live Conan! |

Go to the Two Hour Wargames Yahoo group. In the files section are army lists for Conan for use with Warrior Heroes or other rules. |

The Conan "craze" will probably be revived with the release of a new Conan movie in about a year. The Hyborean Age in great to game, I use 25mm ancients and Warhammer Ancient Battles rules. |

Rwphillipsstl, we're showing our age aren't we! I have a copy too! (and I bought it when it was first published!) |

Thanks, guys, I am glad to see I am not the only REH fan. Didn't Ral Partha make some specific figures for the Hyborian Age YEARS ago? Were those 15 or 25? To the Editor, I kind of miss the old format where you could go to a specific type of figure and it would pop out the manufacturers, but I know that was a real pain!!!, especially with all the new companies appearing/disappearing. Back to the Hyborians, do you guys do anything special to differentiate these armies from historicals, brighter paints or paint schemes, something to set them apart? AGPLUMMER, a new Conan film? I heard rumors, but. . . Is it Conan the King? Not to sound unappreciative, but I hope the producers take this one to a higher level than the last. Saber6 and Rwhpillipsstl, I got a copy but it kind of bummed me out, I guess because I was hoping it would be more like a Wargames list of different troops, rather than a general outline. Then again, which is better, too much or not enough? |

At the risk of also showing my age,I used to have a copy of Armies of the Hyborian Age back in the 70's and a large collection of Hyborian figures from the now long-gone Minifigs range. I remember spending hours in the basement of the Minifigs shop by Victoria Station, working out my army lists. Anyone else admit to having been there? |

richardjblade, Don't worry about the Conan phase ever passing away. It's just like old rock and roll musicians. Most kids don't know who they are but there will always be somebody who remembers that Paul McCartney was in another band before Wings! LOL! |

Yes, Ral Partha did a Hyborian range in 25mm. I've got some of them from a British online store a couple of years ago (I forget the name, sorry). I think they are still available. |

Speak for yourself, grayhairs, for I bought my copy when I was in junior high (and the rules were several years old then). I think I bought it at Polk's in NYC on a trip, but I'm not sure. Maybe thirty years from now, people on a virtual listserv will discuss Scorpion King lists and whether anyone has a miniature hologram of the Rock. |

I bought the Royal Armies of the Hyborian Age rule book about a year ago from FGUs web site, (they still had some copies left after all these years). They still might have some for sale if anyone is interested in buying a copy and it was still at the original price, about 6 bucks I think. |
