Mongoose Miniatures recently sent me some of their new Rogue Trooper miniatures to paint and preview.

The lovely folks at Mongoose Publishing have sent me three of their new Rogue Trooper miniatures to paint and review. They've launched a kickstarter to raise funds for their new Rogue Trooper miniatures line and wargame, the latest product from their 2000AD license. It's already raised three times the amount they were asking for, so it's a safe bet if you want to join in. Only 7 days to go though.

You can also download the current play-test version of the rules (for free) on the Kickstarter page.

For review, we have a Nort Trooper, a Souther Trooper and the infamous Rogue Trooper himself, the first of three planned Rogue Trooper sculpts. Here's a quick group photograph.

I'm a die hard rogue trooper fan from the 80's. I had enormous hopes for the kickstarter, and I jumped in early.

I have to say though that these are the only figures hat have been shown, and your pictures are far better than the ones on the kick starter itself. However having seen the quality of these closer now, I am deeply unimpressed.

I actually cancelled my pledge last week as it became clear to me his wasn't developing in a way I wanted to invest money in, and ill probably only pick up the occasional sculpt should the game get made. The rules themselves IMO do not reflect the deadly environment of Nu Earth. The crow baring in to the RT kickstarter of more Judge Dredd stuff was the final straw for me.

Thanks for posting, but I agree with Brandlin on both counts (quality of miniatures, and failure to tie the game rules more closely to the setting).

well the figures are disapointing indeed, looks like they have been sculpted in 90ties and agree with rules.
iam fan of Rogue trooper universe. Hell if the figures were worthit i will create my own system or modify existing systems.
Bad move mongoose

Brandlin, Parmenion, Hayden: We are doing an update of the rules right now. What would you like to see in them?

Brandlin05 Mar 2013 9:10 a.m. PST

Matt

I left a couple of lengthy comments on the kickstarter about my view of the rules, the use of armour saves and the lack of any reference to the atmosphere or environmental effects.

I think what you have are workable rules, but they aren't Rogue Trooper / Nu Earth rules to me.

Envrionment will be in the rules tomorrow. We had a chat about the use of armour saves, but I feel that their use on one Hit models replicates the effects of shells penetrating suits without any faffing around (the guy is dead either way).

Now, when the skirmish rules come out (maybe tomorrow too!), _then_ you will certainly be worrying about holes in suits!

I have to disagree vehementally on the quality of the miniatures. They're gorgeous. Yes, there's not a lot of detail on them, but there wasn't a lot of detail on the characters in 2000Ad either. They pretty much perfectly capture the character of the two factions they represent.

Also, I do think it's a little harsh to through up your arms in disgust at a rules set that's still a WIP. I fully expect we'll see some very interesting rules for Nu Earth terrain and conditions. I love the concept of suit eating acid-clouds wondering randomly across the tabletop, for example. So I'm really looking forward to seeing the proposed environment rules.

Lead legion. Your views, your prerogative.

My views differ.

Lead Legion06 Mar 2013 3:11 a.m. PST

And I respect your views. The points you made were valid. While I disagreed with some of them, I'm very glad that Mongoose will be making some of the adjustments you mentioned. Especially with regards to the environment.

I was bit confused by the presence of the Judge Dredd options in the kickstarter myself. Going by the Judge Dredd squad stats, I suspect the idea is that the Rogue Trooper rules will be useable for platoon level games in the JD world as well.
