Anyone out there who read the article in Wargames Soldier and Strategy # 64 named "Charles the bold, being bold" and you are familiar with English Civil war period Siege practice do you feel the basic set of siege rules outlined in the article could be adapted for the English civil war? What changes would have to be made to make them 'feel' period proper? As an aside, how would an army assault the walls across a moat? Boats? swim? The reason I ask is that I wish to make some siege type scenaroes to play the next time I play A good many thanks in advance |

To deal with a moat, I would imagine the besieger might try to divert/drain off the water, or would use fascines of brushwood to fill the moat to enable troops to cross on foot. |

Haven't read the article, but I would be surprised if castles with moats, as such, existed in the 1600's. Larger forts – certainly on the Continent – would be full-on Vauban style star fort constructions with earthen walls, ravelins, etc. OTOH, if you want to do a small-scale siege of an English country house, you would be dealing with a thick, brick wall and an attacking force with little siege artillery that would try and take the place with a swift assault. And yes, any water obstacles would be dealt with by boats, fascines, portable bridges that the besiegers had made up – in fact, anything that looked as if it might work. |

I've just read the WSS article; frankly, for the typical improvised siege of a fortified house in the ECW, with equally improvised fortifications, I would start from scratch rather than trying to adapt the WSS system. |

@arthur1815.. where if you were going to start from scratch would you begin? |

That's a very pertinent question. Give me a little time – rather busy with settling my mother into a nursing home – and I'll get back to you, as it's a topic that interests me, too. |

There's a supplement for Forlorn Hope about sieges which includes rules for barricades and walls and stuff and also several scenarios. They're probably reasonably easily adapted for whatever rules you're using. |
