I thought I'd share my latest ruminations on combat lethality across editions of Warhammer:

What do you think, am I imagining it? What might it mean?

Yes.

What it means is that GW wants a more dynamic or "action-packed" game, especially as the game now encourages larger army sizes.

I for one like the larger units. Except that I have Bretonnians and because the last update was 2004, we have unit size limitations on Knights. However, my big blocks of 40-50 infantry figures look really cool.

Excellent write up and the math looks sound. As someone who played "Oldhammer" I do remember that games took longer but seemed to have more flavor and ebb and flow. Now it is just a slug fest. Not my cup of tea anymore sadly.

Great post. I enjoyed reading how the game has evolved. Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

More lethality= more miniatures= more sales. Had this figured out many years ago, and is why both WFB and W40K are now games where gobs of figures run into each other on a 6x4 table, rolling scads of dice and invoking assorted special rules with similar effects. Yes, a predictable slugfest with no flavor.

Brian:

As to larger units it won't help the Bretonians. Knights are no longer worth the point cost and fielding large units will only increase the gap between effectivness and cost.

As to unit size 40-50 is now modest. Many now field 80+ units.

First off, I really do like your post on this issue. I do tend to agree that the WFB general rules have evolved over the time to make for more lethal units. I did not see anything on the lethality of elite units that now have multiple attacks.

It seems that the 7th edition made it common for most armies containing at least one unit of man sized troops that will strike with two attacks, usually with a higher WS and Strength. It used to be in the 6th where I paid enough attention to this issue, that only a very few armies had elite rank and file units that had this ability. Even when you had this ability it was very limited (Bretonnian Grail Knights) or prohibitively expensive.(Chaos Chosen units)

I don't include Ogres sized troops in this assessment. They were multi-wounded, expensive, and limited in the army list.
