A fellow sailor on SOG Anchorage sold me some NavWar packs he had laying around recently. This is the Revolutie. The Revolutie was a Dutch 3rd rate ship of the line carrying a nominal 68 carriage guns. It was launched June 15th, 1779 at Rotterdam. It was captured by the British on August 17th, 1796 and renamed the HMS Prince Frederick.

A comparison shot with Langton's HMS Glatton:

This ship took considerable work to make it a model that would look right on the same table with my Langton and GHQ ships. More about what I had to do on volsminiatures.blogspot.com

Very cool Vol, thanks for posting. I've never seen the Nav War ships before. I think I prefer the GHQs and Langton's (Nav War sails seem a little flat to me) but you do a great job on it. Awesome work on the rigging especially.

It's interesting that the ship was renamed in British service. They left the French and Spanish names relatively intact on so many of their captures. Perhaps the Revolutie's name inspired more uncomfortable feelings?

Vol, having subsequently read through your blog post, I'm all the more impressed by the precision of your scratch building work – well done!

Looks good. However, you have the yellow and the black on the hull reversed.

What you have now yellow are actually the gunpports and the wales between.

dantheman,

Affirmative and done intentionally. I did not want it to look like the typical British ship. If you read the description on my blog site I explain the different stripe – Black stripe along the gunports, yellow hull (wales) with yellow port covers. When open the whole stripe along the gundecks would appear black. I have another Revolutie that I will probably do the other way as the HMS Prince Frederick.

woof, what a lot of work, but she sure is an attractive 'tall lady' now!

I had an interesting thought for making sails: take the plastic blister pack, and pour in near-boiling water, then pick up the blister by the edges to let the plastic in the center sag. Cheaper than brass foil, and about as hard to make.

Lion,
That's a really good idea! I will have to try that.

James,
You are right there. The sails were absolutely flat with no detail at all. I plan to scratchbuild the masts, spars and sails for all of the rest of the NavWar ships I purchased. I just bought 12 more Davco ships from the same gentleman tonight so we'll see if they are any better. I still have 8 Langtons, 7 GHQ, 9 NavWar and 2 Davco ships left to build, plus these 12 new ships. Plenty to keep me occupied for a while. Now if I could only find someone to game with!
