Of possible interest.

"During the Great Patriotic War there was not a clear title as "submarine ace": Western countries were used to give attention to the boats and the crew often using personal war-flags for submarines with painted on them the recorded victories. German Navy give more focus to the Submarine Commander, calling "aces" the one that got large tonnages of enemy shipping sunk. Soviet Navy both awarded the crewmembers, the submarine (with titles as "Guards Badge" or "Order of the Red Banner" and the number of victories painted inside a large decorative red star on the submarine) and important honors to the Commander. Here there is the list of the 45 Submarine Commanders that got at least 5 victories on enemy ship in Eastern Front: all of them were Soviets except 5 that were Germans and one was a British commander. 17 of the 39 Soviet aces got the title "Hero of the Soviet Union". Differently from Western or German use, when a submarine commander could claim what he wanted, Soviet Navy was strict on giving a victory after a claimed success: aerial claims or lack of proof could often remove the victory for the commander (and the submarine) and unsuccessful commander usually were removed from action.

Some Soviet aces that got victories using mines are weapons were not at first recognized as commanders that used torpedoes and some victories were confirmed only after the war..,"
