I am trying to find uniform colors for Dutch troops at start of WW2. I have seen some that were greenish. Any one suggest what paint would work. Also, what color were the colonial troops and the marines. Links would be nice. Thanks much

I don't think they wore jeans and striped golf shirts. |

Hello Bob Good page here on the East Indies army link seems a 'more' green than normal uniform. My old Mollo says that the marines had a navy blue and also a grey green service dress (similar to the army) Here's a b&w pic of marines but I would guess the navy blue service dress:-

Shame I can't ask my late dad for you. He was a Dutch soldier in WW2: link link

I would try using Vallejo German Fieldgrey as the base and then mixing with a light grey or white for the highlights. |

This topic's cropped up a couple of times here – but like you I can't be bothered searching the forum, and so instead relied on good old Google: PDF link link link

I used the following scheme for my European 1940 Dutch, all colours Vallejo Helmets 995 German Grey Tunic, trousers and Puttees 920 German Uniform Webbing 879 green Belt and ammo pouches 872 leather Brown Water Bottle and bread bag 315 Buff Respirator bag 975 green Shoes Black The Marines (high morale) in the photo were fortunately in barracks at Rotterdam awaiting shipping out to Dutch East Indies, when German Airborne troops landed from ,I think, Heinkel 115 Floatplanes on the river in a coup-de-main attempt on the Rotterdam bridges nearby. A savage fight ensued which only stopped following the German threat to level Rotterdam by heavy bombing. Not sure if the Marines were wearing tropical or European kit under their greatcoats. regards Paul |

Thanks to all for the great help. I searched TMP and the net and did find a couple of items above but hardly most. Lot of very useful material. One of my favorite finds was in the Osprey uniform files, a Brandenburger dressed as Dutch soldier during the invasion. Hard to believe the colonial troops wore that lime green uniform. Paul or James, got at suggestions for what Vallejo for that? |

Good picture of Dutch Marines here
MARINIERS OP DE SCHIETBAAN
(Kralingen, 1939) text Still pretty rare these pictures of Marines during an exercise with a Lewis machine gun at firing range in their Kralingen (Rotterdam). They wear of course their striking dark (blue) e veldjas and flat cap with the Marines emblem. |

I think QRF just produced KNIL in 15mm, maybe they can recommend a colour? |

I used Humbrol Grass Green (83) for the KNIL and it works well. The Marines in the Dutch East Indies seem to have also worn blue tunics, with green trousers (worn with puttees) and helmets. However, half the KNIL 'Marine' battalion was actually made up of sailors and dockyard security troops, so they may have worn something else. Puttees are usually shown as khaki, but but a re-enactment group shows them as green, matching the uniforms. |

I think QRF just produced KNIL in 15mm, maybe they can recommend a colour? A sort of a greyish-greeny colour looks good to me. |
