Here ya go:
link What do you think? If so, how tall should they be? And what sorry of weaponry should their infantry have, if any? Thanks, Dan |
WarWizard | 16 Feb 2013 4:54 p.m. PST |
Yes in 15mm and in 28mm please. |
Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut | 16 Feb 2013 6:27 p.m. PST |
No, not Martians. Martians have oversized exposed brains, or possibly tusks and four arms. These, however, are most definitely perfect for the H'duli from Proxima Centauri IV. |
napthyme | 16 Feb 2013 8:32 p.m. PST |
They remind me of the tripods TV show aliens only these have just two legs instead of 3 |
TheCount | 16 Feb 2013 8:48 p.m. PST |
'Look pretty cool as they are, menacing without weapons! Perhaps if sculpted around 15-18mm size they could be adaptable for use in 10mm-thru-28mm gaming? Maybe throw in an "overlord" type figure, a bit larger, as an option too. Cheers, TC. |
FABET01 | 17 Feb 2013 8:04 a.m. PST |
They are martians. They're from the 1953 movie adaption of "War of the Worlds" |
haywire | 17 Feb 2013 10:28 a.m. PST |
Kinda. You never really knew what the George Pal Martian had below the torso. Whether it had 3 or 2 legs or just stumps was up to conjecture Here is the costume

Hawkeye88 | 17 Feb 2013 10:33 a.m. PST |
They will if you believe they will. Only you can decide what makes, for you, a cool 15mm Martian. Now, if you're asking about whether you should make and sell them, and that's why you care what others think
then that's a different question. :D |

This is why I mentioned the stumps
|
haywire | 17 Feb 2013 7:06 p.m. PST |
Now I want to watch the 1980s TV series all over again. Where they were hiding in home made enviromental suits and would cellularly bond with people every once in a while. |

Here's a different concept, with multiple legs: link link link Dan PS. Which series was that? |

I'm intrigued now! Is this show available to watch online? Thanks, Dan |

Although not shown on screen, I have always believed these Martians had two legs not the stumps shown in the model above. Think about the speed at which the Martian runs away when hit by Dr. Forrester. Would definately love to get these in 15mm scale. They would have to probably be cast as 10mm to 12mm figures as they were shown as shorter than the female lead in the movie. If someone casts these, I want at least two dozen !!!! |
Rottenlead | 19 Feb 2013 6:49 a.m. PST |
I actually like the original artwork more than the models presented, because the head looks more in proportion and integrated in to the torso/shoulders. I just worry that a 15mm interpretation could go a little heavy on the shoulder pads which would not look right to me. Please do make them though! :) |

Well, for those who game with 28-30mm figures, it looks as though someone did make WOTW 1953-style figures at one time or another. Take a look at the two figures front left:

I would pay for these in a heartbeat in 15mm

Those are the same 28mm ones I was referring to in the last post, but yours is a much much nicer pic! Thanks for that. Dan |

Trekkercop: "They would have to probably be cast as 10mm to 12mm figures as they were shown as shorter than the female lead in the movie." How do you like this, so far? That's a 15mm figure from Rebel Minis on the right:

Cool, Dan. Not my idea of Martians (I'm more into the incomparable Dejah Thoris, myself).

LOL. I hear ya, brother! By the way, this proves that it's not so much the quality of the camera as the quality of the photographer (in this case, my wife). Check this out:
Wow, I think I must be going blind in this hotel room. Those close-ups clearly show a lot of little things I should have noticed and corrected. More here: link Let me know what you think, please. Thanks, Dan |

Excellent sculpt. Really like the fact you have not gone overboard with shoulder pads. Pretty true to the original b-movie creepy factor. Now we want to buy them. Hopefully someone can come up with a Gruntz profile for them. Do they have some sort or fear factor/mind control. :) |
J Womack 94 | 07 Mar 2013 11:35 a.m. PST |
Yes, vein the shoulders, I think. I don't want to sound like I dislike the sculpts. They are brilliant, for what they are. But I would be more likely to use them in a 50's horror game than a VSF one. |
Cacique Caribe | 07 Mar 2013 12:10 p.m. PST |
LOL. I guess it all depends on what particular "brand" of VSF you mean, or if you view VSF as more encompassing than that. TMP link You could always use them as "Selenites" in VSF on the moon! Dan |
J Womack 94 | 07 Mar 2013 2:55 p.m. PST |
If I didn't already have about five sentient races on Venus they would work for that as well. They look like they come from a hot, humid world, hence the hairlessness. |
Curufea | 07 Mar 2013 4:14 p.m. PST |
Give me the Wells version of Martians – body the size of a bear, disk like eyes, tentacles, non-humanoid and unable to support their own weight in Earth's gravity. Otherwise you have less reason for them to use tripod walking machines. Why make resource heavy machines if you can actually field infantry? |

Curufea | 07 Mar 2013 7:52 p.m. PST |
Nice! Although I don't think of animal-like eyes but more flat disk-like for them (mostly because of the musical). Something halfway between Coraline and a squid: link link |
GriffinTamer | 07 Mar 2013 9:51 p.m. PST |
These would be great companions (or opponents) for the critters that will be coming out of the tripedal alien contest. |
Cacique Caribe | 08 Mar 2013 6:43 a.m. PST |
So far I've only been able to make a single model. IF I were able to make a second one, what sort of weapon should it carry? Option 1:
link Option 2:
link Option 3:
link Or should I go for something completely different, based on their unique anatomy? If so what? Or should I start by changing the shape of their hands to look more like this?
link Dan |
Eli Arndt | 08 Mar 2013 12:51 p.m. PST |
Dan, Those sculpts look great. A bit more texturing and they would be perfect. Weapons don't have to look like weapons, as you have pointed out many time. Go for orbs or other rounded shapes. perhaps a tri-lense energy weapon of some sort. Please do not make their weapons look organic. @J – How about using them as some sort of subterranean race hiding on Mars? -Eli |
Cacique Caribe | 08 Mar 2013 5:31 p.m. PST |
Eli, Also, I was thinking of making the upper back as leathery plates that protected gill-like membranes, for breathing thin air. Something like this underneath, perhaps:
What do you think of that concept? And should I make the tips of the gills show a little between the "plates"? Dan |
Eli Arndt | 08 Mar 2013 6:57 p.m. PST |
I would try to do that if only to minimize the undercut of flaps. -Eli |
J Womack 94 | 08 Mar 2013 7:06 p.m. PST |
Oh, the tri-lens energy weapon sounds good. Or maybe
The weapon carried by the Triceraton? Man, I loved that comic. |
J Womack 94 | 08 Mar 2013 7:10 p.m. PST |
Eli: That's a maybe, yeah
|
artbraune | 08 Mar 2013 7:29 p.m. PST |
The gills would be alien enough to really differentiate your Martians from anything else out there
|
TrekInVegas | 10 Mar 2013 12:46 a.m. PST |
Dan, Love the sculpt. This was the size I was thinking of compaired to other 15mm human sized figures mentioned in my prior post. Yes, I would go with the veins as long as thay are not too oversized for the mini. As for weapons, I have some of the 1953 movie version resin kit war machines that I have used in 15mm (or a huge scale in 6mm) battles. I would use these as Infantry for the War Machines. Something similar to the heat ray from the War Machines' cobra eye as a weapon perhaps? I have also thought that the GZG Phalons were along the lines of the WOTW Martians, but not quite (most likely copyright issues). Some gamers may even see them as a faction of the Phalons. I still want two dozen when they are cast . . . Oh . . . what the hell . . . make it three dozen. |
