It's a pleasure to let you know about my new adventure, the creation of Bac Ninh Miniatures.

I've always thought that it would be great to have a little brand of miniatures and after thinking over it for a long time I decided to take this big step.

As a passionate of Japanese history, it was very clear to me in what historical period/conflict the Bac Ninh Miniatures are focused.

Japan 19th century, the last years of Tokuwaga Shogunate, also known as Bakumastsu and specifically during the Boshin War (1867-68), a conflict that faced Shogun's troops with the Emperator's troops.
The fall of the Shogun's troops and their followers lead into a new era in Japan, the Meiji restoration.

My intention is not other than showing you the fascinating period of the history of Japan and being able to reproduce
this into a tabletop or simply being able to add to your collection a few miniatures magnificently sculpted of this specific period.

Currently there are no miniatures of this conflict of the Japanese history, which means that Bac Ninh Miniatures will be the first one offering these kinds of miniatures.

The great Paul Hicks has been the elected one to create these sculptures and as you can see his work has been amazing, as always!

It's a risky bet given that it is a very little known conflict and I can't know if it will be accepted,
this means that its success and continuity of this range of miniatures depends mostly on the interested people.

This is the first pack that will come out and it will be available in a couple of weeks approximately.
As you can see it consists of four miniatures, two officers and two NCOs. The officer and the NCO with the "great wigs" are specific for the Emperor's troops, concretely of the Tosa, Choshu and Satsuma Clan.
The other ones can be used for both sides.

Following this pack, other ones will be released containing basic troops, and more things that I have on my mind,
but as I said before, the continuity of this range depends mostly from you.

In this blog you will be duly informed about all the news of Bac Ninh Miniatures, where I also will be publishing some topics related to this conflict (uniformology, articles of painting and history, etc.)

please, how tall are the figures?

Rokurota07 Feb 2013 2:53 p.m. PST

Sorry, 28mm.

Pretty cool looking figures. I was playing with the idea of gaming this period after my trip to Japan this time last year. It seems like it would be a very colourful period to game and leave you with a very rewarding collection.

As an aside, does anyone know how many Paul Hickses are out there?

autos da fe07 Feb 2013 3:53 p.m. PST

Pictors: Hahahaha.

Hicks is currently draining my budget by small cuts from many companies. These are very nice.

Sloppypainter07 Feb 2013 4:58 p.m. PST

These are very nice. I'm interested in seeing more from this period.

Mark S07 Feb 2013 6:26 p.m. PST

Fantastic, always wanted to do this period ever since I read The Last Samuria by Mark Ravina, however I would not buy until enough figures are out to cover the basic game. If I purchased straight away I would end up with figures I cannot use.
I will be watching and if all basics covered I will buy lots!
All the best,
Mark.

gambatte ne Rokurota-san!

Best wishes in this endeavor to cover a neglected area of Japanese military history.

Now to find a not-Himura Kenshin and not-Saito Hajime … *G*

Lion in the Stars07 Feb 2013 8:17 p.m. PST

Kenshin will be easy. Find a 25mm samurai in 'civvies'. Or maybe a 20mm one, Kenshin is a scrawny runt a head shorter than the average Nihonjin. evil grin

Saito is a bit tougher, since you need an 1870s Tokyo Police officer. Might be easiest to grab a US Marine in the 'choker' collar and headswap.

So this is why he's not producing Napoleonics like he's supposed to be….

I think there might be another manufacturer out there that makes Nappies. If you give me a bit I'll try to remember who it was.

domo arigato, Lion-san.

In the case of Kenshin, I might have that covered. I've some Ral Partha 25mm samurai from when they had the Bushido RPG license. There might be a few unarmored ones in there. At the time we were playing the L5R RPG, so I focused on painting the armored ones as none of our bushi were unarmored.

As for scrawny, comparing the Ral Partha to the offical L5R Clan War 28mm figures, the RPs are dwarfed!

@Rokurota: I'm really torn. I think that the Meiji Restoration and Boshin War would be best gamed in 28mm because of all the characters, but I really am trying to stick to 15mm for any/all new projects.

Heck, somewhere I have a virtual pile of the Legends rules for gaming the battles for Kyoto in the 1860s.

I wish you lots of luck with this!

That man Hicks, again! Excellent figures. The guy needs a medal, or a twin brother.

Great stuff.

I regret that at 11.75 euros inclusive of postage to UK which converts into £10.21 GBP I cannot afford that for only four figs much as I want to undertake this war.
