Has anyone played the Judge Dredd minis game from Mongoose? I'm a long time fan of the comics who's interest has rekindled after just recently watching the latest movie (which despite my disappointment with the lack of futuristic vehicles at the beginning
) I absolutely loved
my word did Karl Urban make the perfect Dredd or what! Anyway just wondering is the game worth a look
Thanks in advance |

It's free to download and simple enough that you can figure out how it plays just by reading it IMO. It handles the Judges better than the 1st edition did, which I own in hardcopy. You should find people like it. If you don't like it, you could always use something else, like 7TV or Infinity without losing any money. So take a look at the rules and buy the minis if you like them. You can't lose. BTW the Mongoose rules are more for the comic than the new Dredd movie. For the new movie, you would need something grittier and more deadly--Infinity might work better for the movie now that I think about it. Hey, both rules are free so check them out. |

Dredd was excellent but on rewatch I realized I won't be buying it. It's just so stark and violent that it won't get any amount of replay value around our house. Urban nailed the character, like you said GP. I've downloaded but not tried the latest iteration of the rules. I liked the older one (Gangs of Mega City One) but didn't feel like evangelizing enough to get a group going with that set. |

The Mongoose rules capture the feel of the comics. For a grittier and deadlier Dredd, I use 5150. |

If you do not like the rules but still love the theme and figures (citadel or foundry too) we have used combatzone for years to play 2000AD. We found using an autopistol with 2D8 dam and 25 short 70 long was best for the lawgiver. The rules where flexible enough to have strontium dog cameo appearance scenario. For the record the mongoose rules are good and cater for the weird and wonderful encounters in 2000AD. |

Thank you guys thats really helpful
I didn't realize the rules are free to download so I'll try them out and might look at the alternatives pointed out here if I feel they need altering
The old Judge Dredd RPG from GM (I think
) was the first non-board based game I ever played and I remember recruiting half our football team to play it every so often
.so I have fond memories Thanks again |

Don't forget there is also the free Block War add on. These games look good fun after the first read and have inspired me to game one of my favourite comic book heroes from my youth. |

Dredd was a brilliant movie adaptation of the comic. It had the right mix of black humour and Karl Urban played the Dredd part perfectly. Because I live there, the ubiquitous South African taxis and Judge Dredd driving along the Johannesburg M1 underpass were really jarring and at the same time cool. As for rules, Infinity is probably what you're looking for but hard to get into with all the extra rules for camo, link teams etc. Keep it simple and you should have yourself a good game. For the Lawgiver, I'd reccommend drafting your own rules – there aren't really good analogues among the Infinity weapons. |
