Hi Everyone:

This is really exciting news for Warzone fans! A new UK company has secured the rights to a new version of Warzone. The game is called Warzone:Resurrection and features all-new models that are digital sculpted. The models are based on the classic Mutant Chronicles artwork, (unlike the horrible, over-sized pre-paints.) The models will be plastic and resin. Here's a link to their site:

I really like the Warzone universe and I can't wait to see what they have in store for us fans!

WOW this is outstanding news!

Charles Marlow02 Feb 2013 4:17 p.m. PST

Holy crap! Thank you for posting! I'm a fan. It's really very interesting that the minis will be based on the Mutant Chronicles artwork; it's my preference. I've plenty of minis from the various editions and I'll happily collect new sculpts as well…

Malaki the Wonderer02 Feb 2013 4:35 p.m. PST

good news indeed.

KTravlos02 Feb 2013 4:44 p.m. PST

indeed very good news

JRacel02 Feb 2013 6:05 p.m. PST

While I think this is really cool for a lot of people, how hard is it going to be to get game stores and online retailers to carry this again after the last several times it crashed and burned? This is a serious question since memories are quite long for retails on this kind of thing.

wolvermonkey02 Feb 2013 6:10 p.m. PST

Very very cool ! And I've actually been in the mood to paint some WZ minis too. Even more so now.

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP02 Feb 2013 7:32 p.m. PST

Well, I am very interested too. The challenge will be to get new folks interested. I have almost every faction so wouldn't be likely to be much new. However, if the rules were good I'd be playing it which would draw interest in a store. Others doing the same would also likely generate some interest.

It's been about a decade or so since stores seriously carried the line. Excelsior didn't have that many stores carrying it. So, I'm not sure how local stores would react. A intro box set providing good value would go a long way to solving that issue.

Thanks,

John

And there are a lot fewer stores now than there were a decade ago…

Privateer4hire02 Feb 2013 8:46 p.m. PST

I hear GW is actually opening more stores (as one man units) so they can spread the Hobby.
Think there's a chance they might carry WZ:R?

JRacel02 Feb 2013 10:29 p.m. PST

@Privateer4hire,

Your kidding right? If it is not made by GW, they don't consider it "part of the Hobby". You have a better chance of buying Warzone at Target or Walmart than a GW store.

15mm and 28mm Fanatik02 Feb 2013 11:12 p.m. PST

While this is good news, I'm skeptical given Warzone's and Chronopia's track record after Target Games AB in Sweden went out of business back in 1999. Here's a brief history:

Paradox Entertainment did nothing with the license;

Excelsior Entertainment released 'Warzone:Universe Under Siege' before going bankrupt itself;

Prince August picked up the rights but only distributes and does not develop the product.

Of course, there's the Fantasy Flight Games 54mm CMG but really, who cares?

I wish Prodos Games the best of luck, but I'll be pleasantly surprised if it doesn't go bankrupt like all the others.

Disclaimer: I'm not a 'hater' because I love Warzone and Chronopia and have the rulebooks and minis to prove it, but let's be realistic here.

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP02 Feb 2013 11:52 p.m. PST

I don't believe Prince August picked up any rights. Only product.

The Warzone property under Target made money and was doing quite well. However, under Sweden's corp law the Company had to bankrupt every division not simply the one which wasn't making money. In the USA this would not have happened. Otherwise Warzone would likely be going on to this day.

Excelsior was a small company completely overwhelmed IMHO. They botched the new rules release and tried to incorporate the old sculpts into the game as new units instead of releasing new sculpts. They mishandled the property. I think lack of cash probably was a major issue. Then the license was yanked.

It will be a challenge. But the line will have new figs and new rules. Maybe it will work, maybe not. I think quality and pricing with value may provide an opportunity. Stores will carry the product if folks are playing games of it and asking for it, history or not. We shall see.

Thanks,

John

Griefbringer03 Feb 2013 3:11 a.m. PST

Looking forward to seeing what they will make out of it.

General Exhibition03 Feb 2013 4:40 a.m. PST

History has been unfair and unkind to Warzone, I wish this new venture all the best. The War…To Revive Warzone…Never…Ends.

ordinarybass03 Feb 2013 6:05 a.m. PST

Looks pretty cool.

I didn't see any refference to scale though. Do we even know if this is going to be a 28mm game?

Ironmammoth03 Feb 2013 6:15 a.m. PST

I always loved the rules, they played very well.

Hated most of the minis though…

So this is really interesting news. I'll be keen to see where they take this!

Feet up now03 Feb 2013 6:49 a.m. PST

Good news, look forward to it.
Will be intesresting as all the factions/Corporations are very different. Some great weapons and troop types in the game aswell.

I am not held in the facebook library so can only bring up the little teaser trailer.
Prince august are gonna be miffed or is this their idea?

Prodos games ,do they have a website?

Privateer4hire03 Feb 2013 7:18 a.m. PST

JRacel, I was definitely joking :)

Hydra Studios Sponsoring Member of TMP03 Feb 2013 8:09 a.m. PST

For those of you not on Facebook, there is a thread on Lead Adventure Forum where I first heard of it:

link

They have screen shots of digital renders as well as a sample 3D print.

JRacel03 Feb 2013 11:22 a.m. PST

@Privateer4hire,

I thought so, you seem so sensible most of the time. grin

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP03 Feb 2013 12:34 p.m. PST

In that thread at LAF they say it will be a heroic 28mm range.

Thanks,

John

Privateer4hire03 Feb 2013 1:14 p.m. PST

JRacel, an advantage of the one-man stores GW's opening is the jedi mind trick might actually work. Show up with an armload of those, dressed as a UPS guy and hand them to the kid-manager they're putting in those places.

New starter box from Corporate. They're really testy about these right now so DON'T call higher ups about how to price or register them. Sign here please. :)

GypsyComet03 Feb 2013 1:48 p.m. PST

New sculpts have my interest. Some of the old ones were really tough to like.

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP03 Feb 2013 4:36 p.m. PST

Some of the 1st edition sculpts were so so. The 2nd edition ones were pretty good.

Thanks,

John

Lion in the Stars03 Feb 2013 5:52 p.m. PST

I'd love to see more Chronopia stuff, but Warzone always struck me as a poorly thought out borrowing of GW's universe-concepts.

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP03 Feb 2013 7:36 p.m. PST

Um, what GW Universe thoughts did they borrow? Warzone is a World War I style Universe (where Corporations rule) with low tech. They fight an evil force in the solar system along with each other. The Warzone fluff has long been one of the things that drew me to the game along with a lack of uber characters. Not exactly 40k. grin

Thanks,

John

Lion in the Stars03 Feb 2013 8:30 p.m. PST

Dark Legion isn't close enough to Chaos with the serial numbers filed off?

The entire system is at full-blown war, always has been at war, and will always be at war.

Not the reduced 'war in the shadows' like most of Infinity is, but the full-on monster wars like WW1/WW2.

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP03 Feb 2013 8:47 p.m. PST

Undead Warriors or creatures created by dark science. About the only comparison with Chaos is the bad guys are twisted. So? Lots of backgrounds are similar. No God-Emperor. No space Elves or Orcs. No superhuman warriors in power armor. I could go on and on. Dune has a Universe at war. Is it the same? How about Hammer's Slammers? How about Star Wars? Superficial similarities. In fact, the ONLY time I have ever heard anyone say the two were similar were by GW players who were unfamiliar with Warzone. Even then there weren't many who did. wink

Thanks,

John

doublesix6604 Feb 2013 8:35 a.m. PST

COOOOL some of the best news I've heard in ages, I like some of the new sculpts they are producing will be interesting to see the new rules as I've been playing since the game 1st came out years ago.

All in all I hope they do well as the whole background is interesting and I've enjoyed this game system for years. Also if you don't like the Dark legion stuff like my friend we play it with just the corporations squabbling over the solar systems planets. But the lack of high tech was due to a computer virus.

Shark Six Three Zero04 Feb 2013 8:58 a.m. PST

It was the first mini game I ever played. I sure do miss it!Can't wait to see the new scuplts.

Ping Pong04 Feb 2013 11:04 a.m. PST

My favorite setting. I'm looking forward to it.

Judge Doug04 Feb 2013 3:42 p.m. PST

The Razide sculpt on their Facebook page pretty much melted my eyes with it's awesomeness.

billthecat04 Feb 2013 4:06 p.m. PST

I'm in if the prices are not GW/Privateer-Press style, and the rules are decent. Also, I hope the model count is closer to 20-30 per side (as oppossed to the 50-100 per side 40K style). 'Plastic/resin' miniatures seem to cost as much as metal these days (for us, not the producers)…

Warlord04 Feb 2013 4:39 p.m. PST

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

I hope they do it well – good luck guys!

Durandal04 Feb 2013 9:23 p.m. PST

Honestly, the only similarities to 40k are that they both rip things liberally from the 2000AD/Heavy Metal milieu (those I think WZ/MC takes it to the hilt more by being pulpier) and that the Apostles are roughly analogous to some of the Chaos Gods (though not 1:1 and even the close ones have their differences).

The specifics of the universe, the aethetics and the style couldn't be more different if they tried. Warzone is pulp heroes fighting each other (and interdimensional bio-tech alien aggressors) while 40k definitely went for the space-fantasy Dune-style of grand, sweeping Space Opera. Warzone/Mutant Chronicles is a lot more personal and small-scale.

They also both do the Planetary Romance thing a lot more differently with Warzone going all John Carter/Buck Rodgers and 40k, again, being a lot more Dune-like with more nods to urban dystopias (which they cribbed from MC1 in either case).

WZ/MC definitely had elements that parodied 40k, but it did its own thing just as much.

In either case, I am really bloody excited for this. Need to pull out my Bauhaus, Mishima, Sons of Rasputin and Cybertronic stuff. The new sculpts are looking great as well.

billthecat05 Feb 2013 12:43 p.m. PST

I have fond memories of playing first edition WZ with 15-30 models per side. The rules had some problems, but it was a nice break from 40K 2nd ed. If they keep the model count around that size (platoon level, infantry based) and alter the activation rules a bit (insted of 'activate each man in your squad one at a time')this could be a really great development (assuming it can live long enough…)

blackscribe05 Feb 2013 1:58 p.m. PST

Time to dust off the holy psychic ninjas.

Bran Flayk08 Feb 2013 1:30 p.m. PST

Would it be worth me getting the 80 plastic troops (Bauhaus and Imperial) from Prince August as a starting point if this is getting brought out soon?
I see it's currently a best seller according to their website.

Durandal08 Feb 2013 8:13 p.m. PST

The 80-pack is a great value regardless of anything else. Probably more basic troops than you will ever need for an average game of Warzone, but that just means lots of left-overs for conversions.

The only big downside is that they are the only models in the Warzone range that seem to be 28mm true-scale instead of Heroic. Their hands and heads are normal-sized and they end up looking a bit weedy next to 28mm Heroic stuff (which includes everything in the classic WZ range and apparently the new edition as well). Not a huge deal, but something to keep in mind.

AgustinSantos09 Feb 2013 12:55 a.m. PST

It's been confirmed that the model count is more 20ish than 75+ like 40k. Lower model count just like Warzone in the past.

I'm finding the new style to be very creepy. If you painted up the renders they have shown so far in stark and girtty colours, they'd be great for horror-sci-fi gaming.

If it continues as it is now, I'll likely get two small 20 miniature forces as I'm really digging the updated style and whenever I get into a new game or period, I start off with two small playable forces so I can lend them to people who want to try the game out.

ChrisValera10 Feb 2013 11:57 p.m. PST

Just heard about this, and I am very impressed. They've put out more concept art and greens so far than Gates of Antares has over its entire kickstarter run.

AgustinSantos11 Feb 2013 4:37 a.m. PST

I don't know what the Gates of Antares people were thinking. That people would just throw three hundred thousand pounds at them because of their names?

I don't have any idea what is going to happen with Warzone in a little under 4 days. Could be models released, could be the start of a Kickstarter. Could be the beginning of an open play test. They haven't said what actually happens when the counter on warzonegame.com reaches zero.

But the level of content from Prodos has been way, way better than the BtGoA kickstarter.

billthecat12 Feb 2013 12:44 p.m. PST

20-30 models per side with a unified d20 mechanic, set in a popular universe. This could really be something, especially if figure prices are reasonable (not GW/Infinity/Mercs/DP9/PrivateerPress style…). I for one am excited about this.

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP13 Feb 2013 12:22 a.m. PST

And I am with you on your comments! I am a massive fan of 1st edition. I own several 100 figs. I bought 300+ blisters at one time and already owned a lot of stuff then.

More purchases will be directly tied to value provided. The rules will be bought unless universally panned. I'm likely to run games using the rules locally. But boy value is a biggie to convince me to buy more figs.

I am excited though!

Thanks,

John

doublesix6613 Feb 2013 8:44 a.m. PST

I'm the same as John I have loads of figures but will buy the rules and probably some of the new miniatures gotta collect them all :)

I hope they have a skirmish style game for 20 minis a side and a slightly different version for larger mass battles for those of us who like bigger style battles (not GW/FOW lines of tanks abreast) but bigger squads.. you know hordes of Undead Legionnaires

Capt Flash13 Feb 2013 10:48 p.m. PST

I'm thinking of running Warzone 1st Ed at our local con in early Aprilto fan the fires a bit here in New England….
John, I'm in need of a squad of Golden Lions… ;-)

doublesix6614 Feb 2013 10:19 a.m. PST

Only a few hours to go now to see whats going to be released..

doublesix6615 Feb 2013 5:33 a.m. PST

And its arrived and its a Kickstarter…

I like the Cybertronic & Brotherhood troops not sold on the new Bauhaus yet

Durandal15 Feb 2013 10:45 p.m. PST

Bauhaus designs are still really early concepts but I like that they are doing the same thing they did with Cybertronic. Looking at the 1st Edition minis and modernizing the concept.

The current Hussar concepts are a much better take on the Hussar working from the 1st Edition hockey-mask dudes (just missing the helmet spike).

And of course there are concepts of the helmets that hew closer to 2nd Edition Ducal Militia (which seem to be winning the popular vote… I kind of hope the original and Ducal are the available ones).

The re-designed Vulkan is nice, not as cartoony as the 2nd Edition mini, could use some tweaking, but it is a strong start for the design (and it gets rid of the bloody roll-cage!).

The character concept is stunning (I'm a sucker for the Equalizer though).

We will probably see more refined renders when it hits 35k and Bauhaus unlocks.

I'm in for two starters so far. Razide level.
