There is supposed to be a sequel to 300 coming out featuring Salamis (?) I believe. It will probably have triremes in it. Looks like it is scheduled for an August release: imdb.com/title/tt1253863 |

It will be interesting trying to explain to a Modern Movie Guy that they did not use galley slaves at Salamis. |

Don't worry: the oligarchical Spartans had slaves but in 300 were portrayed as the keepers of the flame for individualism and democracy. Yay! (Still entertaining, though) |

I vaguely remember a film (the Magic Christian)with one of the beatles (Ringo?) which had a galley rowing scene. A wierd thing to remember but I think Raquel Welch was whipping on the galley slaves. Ben Hur also had a galley scene but then so did Carry on Cleo. |

Fellinis Satyricon also has a brief view of war galleys. (Where did I dredge up that memory from!) Incidentally, the film is not suitable for impressionable youngsters. |

In 300 the Spartans were portrayed as violent lunatics fighting for Greek freedom. It was made clear they had slaves and weren't democrats (pretty much like the rest of the world at the time). If you're going to criticise a film at least criticise it for what it got wrong (undead Immortals, war rhinos, fighting in loincloths etc). 300 had plenty of faults but showing Spartans as supporters of 21st century representative democracy wasn't one of them. And 300: Rise of an Empire has a Georgi Stanislavov credited as Persian bomber 03, which doesn't bode well for those of us eager for a more historical movie. Those shark riding ninjas might be added in post production. |

Democracy and slavery are not mutually exclusive. It all depends on whom you define as a "citizen"… |
