If you were in Golem Painting Studio recently you'd have seen a horde of beareded men in tatty clothes. No! We it wasn't us – the painters – it was an army of Picts.

These Iron Age Celts were a commission of largely Foundry miniatures (with some minor conversion work). They lack full bases as the client himself will be mounting these in elements of eight for the Impetus games system. For the purposes of the photos they're stuck to the board with dobs of Blu-Tack.

The richer Picts go into battle on horseback. These horses are great fun to paint – I like their little equine faces. Classic Foundry models.

The Berserkers are covered in woad spirals to scare the enemy while the charge – all dangly – into battle.

A lot of hard work has gone into those – the standing stones with their inscriptions are a nice touch.

Way are they all standing on a side of a mountain? The figures look fantastic but the photography needs editing.

Yes – I like them, too, despite them being a bit bigger than my usual preference. The painting looks a neat balance of skill and effect thumbs up! They will indeed make a nice Impetus army!

Outstanding looking army.

Did people really fiight stark naked in Dark Ages Scotland? If true, it is the best argument I have heard against global warming, no-one in their right mind would try it today.

mollinary even the ancient Greeks did so. There was an unusually warm period from 1000 BC till between 300 & 500 AD.

Haha – thanks. I always like diagonal angles just so I can squeeze more into the same pixel width.

Not only were the Berserkers naked, I painted them in the nude. I'm a method painter.
