For me,

1. The Manchurian Candidate (1962)

2. The Odessa File (1974)

3. The Bedford Incident (1965)

3. The Hunt for Red October.

Not "Movies" but a must for any old Cold War Warrior, once sobered up!

That's a hard list to top Blues, but I will substitute
"A Funeral in Berlin" for "The Odessa File"
Not a film, but top of my list would have been the excellent mini-series "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" with Alec Guiness as Smiley
imdb.com/title/tt0080297
He also starred in a couple of other cold war gems "Our Man in Havanna" and "The Quiller Memorandum".
Not sure if "The 3rd Man" is counted as cold war or war/post-war?
Just remembered "Twilight's Last Gleaming" and "Seven Days in May". Oh dear, I'm too indecisive on this one!
<edit and how could I have forgotten Barks1 suggestion>

doug, that was World War III…
imdb.com/title/tt0084919

I'd put in Buffalo Soldiers…. some cliche stuff, and the Americans are driving Leopard Is, but it included some rarely discussed problems occurring in some US units. In an over the top, Hollywood way :)

I liked World War III… and Ice Station Zebra.

If Pork Chop Hill counts, then I suppose Vietnam War movies count as well as Korean War movies? Platoon…. Full Metal Jacket… Go Tell the Spartans.

Well it's a TV series not a movie but i always felt that the British series THE SANDBAGGERS really captured the cold war as a conflict that went on below the threshold of public awareness. YouTube link

The Tank about a lost crew of Russian Tankers in Afganistan. What are we considering the end of the Cold War Era? Fall of the Wall?

As Uesugi Kenshin said:

Dr. Strangelove
Hunt for Red October
Red Dawn

But Ice Station Zebra, Wargames, The Day After, Fail Safe, and a host of others could just as easily be on the list.

It seems there are two kinds of Cold War era moves, those that are Hot and those that are Cold.

Every movie from 1946 to 1991 is in the cold war era. I will just think about the ones that also deal with that time frame, so exclude The Magnificent 7

On the Hot side, I would second The Beast
"Out of commission, become a pillbox. Out of ammo, become a bunker. Out of time, become heroes. "
The Battle of Algiers
Apocalypse Now (great sound track)
Honorable mention -- Pork Chop Hill

On the Cold Side
From Russia with Love
Seven Days in May
Dr. Strangelove (well, that did get hot toward the end)
Thunder Road

1. Strategic Air Command

2. The Bedford Incident

3. Whoops Apocalypse!

Phillip Forge20 Jan 2013 3:57 a.m. PST

Good call Panzergruppe – Whoops Apocalypse is an amazing film!

John D Salt20 Jan 2013 5:59 a.m. PST

Dr Stangelove, The Odd Angry Shot, Harry's Game Iif we're allowed made-for-TV stuff, otherwise 9th Company).

All the best,

John.

Guthroth20 Jan 2013 6:19 a.m. PST

Only 3 ? Tough but -

1. Dr. Strangelove.
2. The Hunt for Red October.
3. Ice Station Zebra.

Honourable mentions for The Day After and Fail Safe.

Katzbalger20 Jan 2013 7:45 a.m. PST

There was a movie with Michael Caine dealing with a wealthy mogul trying to start an insurrection in the Baltics--something like "The Brain"? I remember seeing it and thinking it was pretty cool, though sort of sad.

I did enjoy many of those listed above, but have to say that Hunt for Red October and Red Dawn were more memorable for me (though not necessarily the best movies).

Billion Dollar Brain. Based on the book by Len deighton

capncarp20 Jan 2013 9:22 a.m. PST

Gotta love "One,Two, Three…" with Jimmy Cagney and Horst Bucholtz. Proving the superiority of capitalism over other theories of civilization.
While not movies, Rocky and Bullwinkle (Boris Badenov, Natasha Fatale, and Fearless Leader), as well as Roger Ramjet, whose Proton Energy Pills gave him the power of 20 atom bombs for 20 seconds, kept us kiddies' brains oriented on the path of goodness and niceness (yeah, right).

On the Hot side, I would second The Beast
"Out of commission, become a pillbox. Out of ammo, become a bunker. Out of time, become heroes. "

The evil tank commander in the movie was allegedly a child at the battle of Stalingrad. I found that pretty hard to believe..

Reference my last, delete Harry's Game/9th Company, insert The Wargame.

All the best,

John.

Rudysnelson20 Jan 2013 6:48 p.m. PST

Ice Station Zebra was the first one to come to my mind. Though I liked the book which had a different bad guy than the movie.

Dr StrangeLove

Red Dawn was one that really hit home.

darthfozzywig20 Jan 2013 7:37 p.m. PST

By Dawn's Early Light is worth a mention, although not a Top Three.

Billy Yank20 Jan 2013 7:46 p.m. PST

Another vote for "The Beast"
