Just looking for Info concerning the painting of late war regular army German soldiers. Did they also wear Italian Camo. Damn spell corrector LOL

Silent Pool19 Jan 2013 3:40 a.m. PST

What's this? Shades of Privates on Parade, or Shades of Grey?

There was nothing camp about the regular German Army, matey!

I think there are some examples of German tank crew uniforms made out of captured Italian camo cloth, I think there are pictures in a Whermacht or Waffen SS camo book, it's in the loft I'll look for it and get back to you.

Italian camp:

Italian camo:

Yes, it was widely worn by SS, Heer and Luftwaffe soldiers, being turned into smocks, zeltbahnen, caps, trousers, tunics, para-smocks, helmet covers and one-piece tank-crew coveralls. Here are some 12. SS 'HJ' men wearing it mixed with SS camo patterns (i.e. the smock worn by the man in the foreground and the trousers of the man on the right):

Here are some Heer soldiers wearing Italian camo zeltbahnen:

R Mark Davies,

thumbs up

Excellent

Here are some Heer soldiers wearing Italian camo zeltbahnen:

As they are sporting Italian helmets, carbines and leather equipment, I would strongly doubt they were German. RSI is my guess.

Cheers
Mark

Those soldiers in the last photo look like Italians.

Jemima Fawr19 Jan 2013 5:23 a.m. PST

Yes, I was hoping you'd spot my deliberate mistake…

You're right. I right-clicked on the wrong photo! :o)

In Brian L Davis' German Army Uniforms and Insignia 1933-45 – page 173, there's a photo of captured German Heer personnel. The one in the foreground is wearing quote "An example of German Army issue trousers made from Italian camouflage material"

I think this photo, or similar is repeated in Mollo's Army Uniforms WW2 as a colour plate.

Cheers
Mark

I can't find the photo I was trying to link earlier, but here's another one: a Major from 116. Panzer-Division, wearing a tunic tailored from Italian camo fabric:

Great pics R Mark, I enjoyed watching " 'Allo, 'Allo " and Dad's Army ! But seriously, I've seen pics of Germans wearing Italian camo. They used Italian AFVs as well …

This is the guy with the 'bad hair day' (Max Wunsche, 12th SS):

picture

Kurt Meyer, also from the 12th SS, is another one seen wearing an Italian camo jacket (as is his friend in the background):

R Mark Davies. The second photo in your first post I have seen listed as Italian W/SS members not Heer. They are armed with Carcano rifles and are wearing Italian leather bandoleers. Robert

Kaoschallenged19 Jan 2013 1:08 p.m. PST

It was popular with the SS and Panzer troops. Robert

Robert,

As mentioned above; I was hoping you'd spot my deliberate mistake…

And I see you got Max Wunsche on a good hair day.

When it comes to DRESSING for a war, the Italians do very well. When it comes to WINNING the war…not so well.

Yes, the Italian camo – and everything that was of military value in Italy that wasn't nailed down to a solid object – was used by the Germans.

Germans use everything. And waste nothing. That's the rule.

Lion in the Stars19 Jan 2013 8:01 p.m. PST

Don't you mean, "Germans use everything because they wasted everything"?

number419 Jan 2013 10:49 p.m. PST

Nothing camp about the German army? Seriously? All that black leather, riding breeches and Village People peaked caps…… Yeah, right!

Charles Besly20 Jan 2013 12:05 a.m. PST

It is truly amazing how a typo can generate sooo much entertainment. Having said that I appreciate all the help. I am trying to paint the most accurate figures I can. Thank you all …Semper Fi
