I have always been rather fond of the Sdkfz 222. The angular construction, low profile, the beetle-like appearance (from the side and rear) cause this to be my favorite non-tank vehicle of the war. Yes, it had its deficiencies, but given a choice of WWII vehicle to own, today, this would be it.

What is your favorite ground vehicle of the war? Let's limit it to support, transport, armored cars, please (for this purpose, let's define "tank" as armored, turreted, tracked, and armed with a main gun larger than 14.5mm).

DUKW.
It is so ugly! And like all hybrids, it doesn't do either job very well, but does do two mediocre.

Rich Bliss18 Jan 2013 7:14 p.m. PST

The M16 MGMC. Why settle for 1 .50cal. When you can have 4?

I've always liked the look and performance of the Daimler armoured car (or Wheeled Tank as it was originally known). link

My favorite is the SDKFZ 232, with the bed frame.

Either the 222 or the Greyhound

This is a no-brainer for me. My favorite non-tracked WWII vehicle is the SdKfz 231 (6x4) "6-Rad," with the SdKfz 234/2 (8x8) Puma coming in at a distant second.

The Italian Saharina scout car. Not sure how practical, but it looks neat.

Partial to the Daimler AC, but the 222 runs a close second.

Those other armored cars are nice, but this is the real champion, gentlemen:

I'm with Goober. M-8 Greyhound. However, if we all have to be unique the British Universal Carrier comes in 2nd.

Humber MKIV or Daimler Dingo, heck why not both?!

Justin Penwith18 Jan 2013 10:31 p.m. PST

@28mm Fanatik

The vehicle can be tracked, but it cannot also be armored, turreted, and have a main gun over 14.5mm. This means an SPG legit is for a possible answer., or even a Hetzer, for example.

I do like the Daimler, too.

The very first WWII land vehicle model I assembled as a kid was the Sdkfz 222. I just liked the look of that vehicle and examined it for hours. I don't know whatever came of it, as I packed it away when I went into the Corps.

The rest of the responses from you gents ARE interesting.

I've always been fond of the Japanese and Russian amphibious tankettes. as the Japanese ones are usually armed a bit better, that would mean the T37:

However, Daimler, Panhard and Puma armoured cars are also on the list.

Gaz004519 Jan 2013 4:28 a.m. PST

I saw a Kettenkrad running about at Bovington when I was a kid and that has always stuck with me…and the beloved Bren carrier- in old black and white movies they hurtled thru' hedges and were very impressive……..that Beetle with chunky tyres looks good too…

Katzbalger19 Jan 2013 5:13 a.m. PST

Staghound or Greyhound for me--though the 222 comes in a close 3rd.

The good old deuce and a half…but I did see a restored dodge power ram that was given an oshkosh plow for snow removal at the Newfoundland airbase. Betcha traffic would move with that filling rearview mirrors! evil grin

I'm fond of the 6- and 8-wheel German armored cars, but the M6 artillery tractor and the Dodge Command Car are also high on my list.

The SdKfz 222 for me, hands down. If I owned one, I'd use it to drive to work!

Dynaman878919 Jan 2013 7:03 a.m. PST

The jeep. But it is a really tough call.

M3 Scout Cars look pretty cool to me.

Laffly V15T, which would have been much better known if events had gone the other way in June 1940

Lion in the Stars19 Jan 2013 9:41 a.m. PST

Schwimmwagen, Willys Jeep in a close second. It's a shame that so few schwimmwagens survived, but I've found a source for fiberglass replica hulls. Funny enough, the big Polaris 4x4s have the same weight and gross weight ratings, so you could use one of them for running gear. You'd need to find a VW Bug VIN plate to make the resulting vehicle street legal, though.

The AS42 Sahariana is firmly in third place.

Griefbringer19 Jan 2013 10:18 a.m. PST

I would say that British vehicles have certain "stiff upper lip" sort of charm, even though they might have had certain shortcomings in their design.

Besides many nice vehicles already mentioned, I have soft spot for the jolly old Quad gun tractor. It may be a bit clumsy and boxy looking, but it does so it in a suitably British fashion. Besides it is also good friends with mister 25 pounder.

Martin Rapier19 Jan 2013 10:22 a.m. PST

If SPs are 'non tank', then I have always had a soft spot for the Jagdpanzer IV.

Otherwise the lowly Universal carrier. The vehicle which has baffled dozens of rule writers….(who seem to think it is some sort of APC).

donlowry19 Jan 2013 10:27 a.m. PST

The sdkfz 10 light halftrack and its armored derivative the sdkfz 250, especially the neu art version with the 2cm gun turret.

Another vote for the SdKfz 234/2 Puma. There's something about those lines which I have always admired.

There's something about the compact rugged appearance of these little guys that has always appealed to me:
