I understand that British troops were issued with brown boots for campaign use and black for parade.

Is this true of highlanders as well? I'm painting some Gordons for August 1914 at Le Cateau.

In particular note item 7 wrt kilted trops.

If they are in kilts in 1914 it looks like they will be in black 'Highland Shoes'.

I'm not sure I'd like to go to war wearing 'shoes', perhaps they were more sturdy than their name implies.
