Many of the painted barbarians (celts, gauls, britons etc) that I see pictured are wearing plaid pants. Is this documented in the historic record or is it just artistic license?

In a related note, the sassanids seem to be depicted in white all the time. Is that also historically documented, or could they have worn more interesting colors like other Persian armies did?

The Sassanid lower classes wore less colourful clothing. The rich still wore outrageously coloured and patterned clothing.

So the pressed peasants would be in solid colours, maybe with trim, and the gaudiness would increase as you go up the wealth scale.

I believe some of the bog burials found have had cloth fragments showing various color patterns. It is rather easy for a hand loomer to make plaids by alternating yarn colors, in fact I believe it was quite common.

Edging in an alternate color was either the selvedge edge done with colored yarn or a protective border to keep the fabric from fraying.
