Ok, does this make sense and have any of you done this. I have built a very nice late Republican Roman army, 28mm Wargames Factory plastics. It took a lot of work but have finished all 10 cohorts and the lights. Still have some odds and ends left to complete. Now, stupid me, have always held a torch for the Hollywood Romans, EIR and after seeing Aventine's Romans, I am so in love with them! Would I be a complete idiot to build yet another legion a few hundred years later? I sold off a nice Foundry EIR army about 8 years ago
but the Aventine ones
take my breath away and I am having a hard time resisting
so
do I forget the idea or submit and have 2 28mm Roman armies
thoughts? |
The Dread Pirate GeorgeD | 08 Jan 2013 6:22 a.m. PST |
Whats wrong with 2 armies. I would say submit and go for it, if its what you want to do. (yeah I know, I am a terrible enabler) Cheers. GeorgeD |

There are significant enough changes in equipmment and organization, and the figures are very pretty. Do it! Heck I know guys who do the same period and armies in multiple scales. That's far stranger IMO. |
Jay Arnold | 08 Jan 2013 6:26 a.m. PST |
How else will you do any of the civil wars? I like Hollywood Romans, too. |
oldbob | 08 Jan 2013 6:27 a.m. PST |
razuse; join the club! I've already done this, to resist the Aventine miniatures lure is hopless. Give in now you will be happier in the long run, even if your wallet is empty! |
razuse | 08 Jan 2013 7:02 a.m. PST |
oldbob, I quit smoking and will blow my cigg money (no pun intended) on Aventine minis
I just love wargame enablers
lol!!!! Thanks Guys
I do have a boat load of 10mm EIR that will go bye bye and a very nice set of 15mm EIR
Essex. Can not part with them
had them for almost 15 years! So, I am a multi scale, same scale Roman Idiot! |
Caliban | 08 Jan 2013 7:16 a.m. PST |
I've recently finished a very large 2nd Punic War army, and will begin a very large Late Republican army this year. And then I will do Early Imperial. And then Mid-Imperial. And then at least one flavour of Late Imperial. Plus all the Eastern Romans, some of whom I have already. Oh, and each of those will in fact be two 'cos they hate each other even more than they hate everyone else. I might even get around to doing a very early Republican army at one point as well. All of which is a roundabout way of saying you can't have enough Romans. Doing them in more than one period is logical, because they are from different periods. Of course, then you need their opponents, and fortunately many of those can fight Romans from more than one period. And if you keep building you will be immortal because the lead pile will always be there, and figure megalomania will ensue. Yes, come over to the dark side

Pictors Studio | 08 Jan 2013 7:16 a.m. PST |
I have two British WWII armies and they are only about 3 years apart. A few hundred years is much bigger difference than that. I'd say go for it. |
Keraunos | 08 Jan 2013 7:23 a.m. PST |
different armies need different figures. I see no problem with that at all. look at it this way, you would be doing a new army this year anyway, its just a question of picking which one appeals to you most – EIR or something else unmentioned at the moment? |
DColtman | 08 Jan 2013 7:41 a.m. PST |
If you do EIR, think of all the new in-period opponents it further enables! I have five Roman armies in three scales, including two from different periods in 28mm. |
RedSaber | 08 Jan 2013 9:18 a.m. PST |
I say It's Your Money! Use it the way you want! And, no you can never have enough Romans! |
Who asked this joker | 08 Jan 2013 10:14 a.m. PST |
They are different periods. Why not build the EIR army as well. If you have the time and money, go for it! |
Lord Raglan | 08 Jan 2013 10:38 a.m. PST |
razuse It sounds like you don't need much encourage and rest assured the Roman crazy boys on TMP will be right behind you. Raglan link |
BigRedBat | 08 Jan 2013 11:16 a.m. PST |
I perhaps fall into the "Crazy Boy" category. I've not had time, yet, to start the latest excellent Aventine range, which I think of as Late Earluy Imperial, but am in general attacking Rome on a broad front:- Polybian Romans:- link Caesarian Romans:- link Early Imperial Romans:- link and link Middle Imperial Romans:- link Late Imperial Romans:- link As said above, one can never have enough Romans! Cheers, Simon |

Miller, you are such a show off!!! |
LEGION 1950 | 08 Jan 2013 12:20 p.m. PST |
Razuse, I would go for it! I have the following Romans,2 Repubilcan Legions, 3 Late Repubilcan Legions and 4 EIR Legions. All those have about 240 to 290 figures! They also have the AUx. that go with them! I also have there oppents from there time frame! It totals out to about 10,000 figures! So go for it!!!! Cheers Mike P.S. Hi Simon, oldbob and Lord Raglan also Paul!!!! |
Lord Raglan | 08 Jan 2013 12:32 p.m. PST |
Simon and Paul, These damn yankees, always have to go over-the-top? Never mind, another 120 Black Tree auxiliary reinforcements arrived today following the Christmas sale. Raglan |
razuse | 08 Jan 2013 1:15 p.m. PST |
wow
I am so in
will order 2 cohorts and LBM shield transfers to start
curse you all
ha ha
so for me, I legion of Late Rep., 1 of 15mm EIR and now
a new beginning
come on Aventine!!!! |
Caliban | 08 Jan 2013 2:15 p.m. PST |
Yes, another victory for the dark side is ours! Actually, I should maybe change to another set of sci-fi references – one of our previous club members bought three legions of eighty Gripping Beast Caesarean Romans all in the same pose because "they should look like the Borg before they discovered space flight". I don't think that particular army ever lost a battle. |
Marshal Mark | 08 Jan 2013 2:33 p.m. PST |
My opinion is contrary to most of the above, in that I would say don't do it. Given that you can play against many of the same historical opponents with both armies and (depending on the rules you use) you may find they play very similarly, I would personally think it best to build something different – maybe an opposing army, but something that plays very differently. Of course there are other factors to consider – such as what other armies you already have (if any), and whether your main priority is the building and painting of the army or playing wargames. |

BigRedBat, well done! Beautiful paintwork, top notch basing. Great looking game. |
oldbob | 08 Jan 2013 5:44 p.m. PST |
Raglan; I have finally finished the first cohort, meaning cohort number one and only after three attempts! |
razuse | 09 Jan 2013 3:38 a.m. PST |
Marshall Mark, I am a painter first
seeing the troops is my biggest motivator. Do not get me wrong, love to play but the real joy comes from the collecting and building of armies. I do have gauls for my 15mm EIR but that is really not correct as you all well know
heck could call them Germans in a pinch. |
BigRedBat | 09 Jan 2013 5:30 a.m. PST |
Thanks chaps. Another Roman army is always a good call. I always reckon that I need to paint my Greeks, but my Romans seem to paint themselves. Cheers, Simon |
wargame insomniac | 09 Jan 2013 9:59 a.m. PST |
The ONLy reason that I would not buy the Aventine later EIR is that I would prefer to buy more Aventine Macedonians. Both ranges are lovely but at the moment I can only afford one of these 2 ranges so will concentrate on what have already. I have quite a few of the really old Foundry EIR but given the chance would upgrade to the Aventine ones without question. Beautifully sculpted, very nice helpful friendly service. Cheers james |

I am sooo proud of all of you! I have been doing Romans since Dave Petrosky talked me into buying a legion of Warrior 25mm Roman Republic some 40 years ago. Right now in 25/28mm I have over a dozen legions and three more planned. Lets not even get into other scales. VR James Mattes |
