I made an inexpensive miniature case a while back using foam and a bead box I bought at Michael's Hobby store:

I also have some pictues of some desert plants I bought at Hobby Lobby and some resin rocks my friend made for me.

I use these for bulk storage of unpainted lead. Every minis type gets it's own slot(s). Have not graduated to adding foam for storage of painted figs, though with space becoming and issue I may just.

Warstore sells a cardboard box with the foam inserts, five run about 50usd, they work well.

Your solution looks great as well.
