I'm looking for substitutes for the horrible Vladimir miniatures from Privateer Press, but I'm having a bit of trouble finding them. I'm basically looking for a male human in full plate with no helmet. If possible I'd like to get two similar miniatures, one with a sword and dagger, and another with a greatsword. I've tried reaper and dark sword miniatures, but no luck so far. Anyone have any suggestions?

The best human in full plate with no helmet, wielding a broadsword, that I've ever seen is this old Grenadier Copplestone Barbarian, now available from Mirliton (Hero on this page link ):

There's also this mini from the same line, but not available (yet) from Mirliton:

The spear is separate, so you could arm him with any weapon you want.

Can't stand the Shoulderpads of Doom, eh? Or is it the Barbie doll waist that bugs you?

Can't think of a thing that comes close to Vlad or the generally over-the-top Privateer sculpting style offhand. Maybe you could kitbash something out of some of the old Chronopia Firstborn infantry figs – if you can find them – although they're maybe a bit more Menite-looking.

eVlad (the older version with greatsword) has separate shoulder pads.

He looks pretty good if you leave them off, the stupidly-huge shoulder pads attach to rather normal-sized pauldons.

Not sure about eeVlad (on horseback), though.

Sorry if you already ruled this guy out, but he seemed viable at Reaper…

I thought you could just cut/file the dagger out of the left hand for your "two handed" version (since Heaven knows the sword is big enough). :)

Is the armor the big objection or are there other aspects of the Vlad mini you don't like?

BTW, he's Dantrag, Northern Adventurer.

Also, any preferences regarding metal, resin, etc…

…and, looking for 28mm or can you go bigger/smaller?

Shadowdragon05 Jan 2013 10:33 p.m. PST

Metal, resin, plastic, the material doesn't matter much to me. I think the Privateer miniatures are about 32mm, so something about that scale would be good. I did notice Dantrag, and I seriously considered using him, but he seems a bit too barbarian. I guess it's the fur around the armour pieces. He's definitely my fallback if I can't find anything else though. As for the original Vlad miniatures, my main objections are the ginormous shoulder pads and absurdly skinny waistline. The Vlads and the wardog are actually the only Khador miniatures I really don't like. I even like the Kayazy.

Aw, how can you not love the warpuppy? :)

Reaper makes a nice pack of bulldogs for those, or you could try Malifaux's Guild hounds.

If you don't like the excellent Mirliton (ex-grenadier) sculpts, then I would take a look at Reaper (and substitute any weapons if needed).

You could check GameZone or try some of the historical Wars of the Roses ranges? How about North Star's Sir John Savage (I think it's another Copplestone sculpt) link

Check out ebay for OOP Mithril Miniatures 32mm M273 Cirdan & M274 Anarion, both in plate, bareheaded and armed with broad/great swords.
