I had bought this old FoW Box: GBX08
It is labeled for early/mid war. But it comes with some early war and some mid war weapons: AT-rifles (ok for early war) and FG-42 rifles (used from 1943 onwards). Many of the minis have rolled up sleeves, so no eastern front winter camo. How do I paint this minis? For Crete and Blitzkrieg? So no FG 42 and allmost all minis have helmet covers. Can i use them for the eraly war period? Or do i go for Italy? If I paint them without sand color/tropical trousers and helmets, can I still use them for summer Italy and the eastern front, Normandy? Best painting guides with vallejo colors? I have the old FoW Eagle book, but I am not sure the paintign guide is correct.

Best regards

Not all FJ wore tropical trousers in the summer…

You could easily use them for the entire war by painting them in green bonesacks (in use right up until 1945), but really, everyone thinks of them in camo. So, go with splinter smocks, forget about tan & water, and do them with field grey jump trousers, whether they have rolled up sleeves or not.

Which is exactly how I did mine:)

I had the same box and did mine for all periods by doing the camo.

I only have some pics of the HMG platoon and mortar platoon though…

I did as Neal and Martin have done. They seem to fit comfortably in many MW/LW situations even though I envision them as a LW West Europe force.

I am giving mine mixed uniforms. numbers are the Vallejo codes.

The Early War ONLY troops (like AT rifles) get 866 Grey Green smocks, 816 Luftawffe blue tunics, pouches and gasmask canisters, and either 830 German Field Gray or 881 Yellow Green tropical trousers.

Midwar troops get camo smocks (don't bother with the straight lines of the splinter pattern), blue tunics, and field gray or tropical trousers. Webgear is 886 Green Gray or 988 Khaki.

Luftwaffe Splinter looks like a base of 830 German Fieldgray, 872 Chocolate Brown stripes and spots, and 823 Luftwaffe Camo green spots.

I special-ordered the Late War FJ pieces, and they're getting either field gray or Italian camo trousers with Tan Water camo smocks.

Italian camo looks like a base of 873 US Field Drab, 823 Luftwaffe Camo Green and 874 US Tan Earth spots.

Tan Water is 886 Green Gray base with 826 German Camo Medium Brown and 823 Luftwaffe Camo Green spots, roughly 1/3 coverage of each, and a few spots of 823 German Camo Beige on the 886 Green Gray.

I am happy to see this thread as I have some German paratroopers I want to do in the early bone sack, and the Artizan guide to use Vellajo Russian Uniform Green just didn't seem right, so I am much happier with the Grey Green 866 color choice as being more accurate. I cannot figure why the many publicatoins one usually sees from Osprey shows them to e wearing a light blue gray color smock?????
