This is a bit off the war but our group is has been collecting DAK, British, Italian and American desert troops for quite a while. We would long to run a campaign game in the desert with our forces but we need a good map, cheap, preferably with hexes. It would have to have significant terrain detail. Any Ideas?

Get me the decent map(s) and I would probably be able to make you one. I have CAD and Photoshp[ and can merge the two. I have made a campaign map for Our WAB Ancients games using the map from the PC game Rome TOtal War (there's a (approx) A2 sized fold out paper map that I scanned in and knitted together to make an A1 for all of continental Europe. Hm, actually, that might do as it is, although it barely covers North Africa and soonly gets a single row of hexes. Let me know what you want really,

Cheers,

Arken

The index map at the top will tell you which detailed maps you want.

My intitial thought was to get the map from Avalon Hill's Afrika Korps game. I'm not sure if it would be detailed enough, however.

A quick search found the map here: link

I was going to suggest the same thing as warwell – AH's Afrika Korps. There are some more recent WWII games that would include N.Africa, but that would probably be your cheapest bet.

Afrika Korps has the escarpments, settlements, 'road' network and some of the more prominent features. Which is really all you need for NA.

The rest is mainly just desert, of varying but predictable undulation, softness or rockiness and occasional bisection by wadis..

Might as well just throw random terrain pieces at the table, which is what we do….

Strategy and Tactics magazine had an insert game Panzerarmee Afrika which was later redone as a boxed game. Game map was the same general size and scale as Afrika Korps, but probably more "accurate".

I own Afrika Korps and that was the germ of this idea but it isn't as detailed as I would like and I didn't want to mark it up (I have owned it now for almost 40 years) But the Panzerarmee Afrika is perfect. I was able to down load a scan from BoardGameGeek.com and I'll have to tweek it some but it will work. Thanks guys!

The Legend Begins has a really nice map covering the same areas as Afrika Korps. It's also a really good game.

This is a good one at a larger scale from the block game Rommel in the Desert

A large sheet of sandpaper….

Rommel in the Desert is a good one too. As for a large sheet of sand paper ….. it did cross my mind ;-)
