Any experts on Soviet camo out there? In the Caspian Sea region, would the Soviet Air Force have used the standard green or would they have used one of the various camo patterns? Looking around 1941, I think.

Have a look round this vvs.hobbyvista.com maybe be something

Thanks, Black Bull. There was some camo used around the Black Sea so it's possible. Hopefully someone will come up with some additional info.

Lol

While the Sovs did have templates the factories were supposed to apply – both for pattern and colours – in practice you got the nearest thing they could achieve to either…

So where the official pattern involved curves the actual might just go with straight edges, and where specific colours were required you could use any equivalent -like tractor paints- gloss green and gloss black?

For the South west though you'll find that local conditions led to the adoption/ use of a two tone sand and brown scheme – I don't use Vallejos so have no numbers to give you and believe that you could justify virtually any finish on the basis of "it's what was in the factory paintshop"

When a factory painted a new airplane, did they know what theater it would be assigned to?

I don't really care if it was factory painted – just wondering about the camo vs. plain green. Phil, I found a green and black camo used around the Black Sea, but I've seen the sand/brown on Wings Palette and guessed that it was for the more arid regions. Thanks for confirming it.

Did you try "Wings Palette"?

Sundance29 Dec 2012 2:50 p.m. PST

Yup, Dave, see the post just above yours! The problem with WP is that a lot of the pics don't indicate date or location or both.

Black Bull29 Dec 2012 4:40 p.m. PST

and the WP drawings are drawings, some of dubious accuracy.
