Howdy,

I'm looking for sources on the 1914 campaign in southern Poland/Galicia.

I have the broad overview sources Stone's Eastern Front etc.

Any help appreciated.

Kind regards,

JAS

Hello JAS,

The Oregon ConSim Games site has a copy of N. Golovin, "The Great Battle of Galicia: A Study in Strategy", Slavonic Review, Vol. 5, No. 13 (June 1926), pp. 25-47.

The same site also has a good bibliography.

And, if you can read German, the first six volumes of Österreich-Ungarns Letzter Krieg 1914-1918 are online at:

I understand the published version of Österreich-Ungarns Letzter Krieg 1914-1918 also included a volume of maps, but I have not yet found these online.

Good evening,

Thank you both. I had found the Wikipedia entries, but had not noted the Golovin link there in.

I had seen Golovin referenced in Stone's book, and was glad to get that source in English.

All this stuff, unfortunately falls in the little map, big arrows category. Useful, but note how there is always more detail provided for the German OBs. For the Russian you get Corps identified, for the Germans the OB often goes down to regimental level. Alas.

I appreciate both responses. Thank you.

For the Russian Army in July 1914 take a look at:

Good evening,

I had that link for the pre-war OB/units of the Russian Army, thanks though. Much appreciated.

You never know however, to what extent the pre-war organization survived mobilization for the opening campaign. Still it's a reasonable assumption to use the units listed.
