I spent the last couple of days building up my copy of the HMS Frolic. I had a great time doing it and I would highly recommend this kit. If you don't have any experience building something like this I would start with one of the smaller ships first like the HMS Lady Nelson or the USS Lee since those build up the same basic way unlike the American Gunboat which has a completely different method of construction. However, if you proceed methodically, check your work as you go and be patient you could start right off with this one. I did encounter a few problems with parts and instructions but that didn't lessen my enthusiasm for this well engineered kit. After the lessons learned on this one I'm looking forward to building the USS Wasp. Here are a couple of pictures;

If you want to read about by trials and tribulations there is a two part post on my blog;

Thanks for posting that. I've had my eye on those since I first saw someone post about them a week or so ago. They look fantastic. I'm tempted to do Valcour island and have been for a while. This could be the thing that pushes me over.

That would take a lot of space for 28mm ships! Weren't there like 40 total ships of various sizes involved in that?

It would, but it would look spectacular.

It would indeed!

These ships and gunboats are right for the wargamer who wishes to relicate the many amphibious operations that took place during the War of 1812 on the ocean coasts and the Great Lakes.

Heisler – Did you paint your HMS Forlic yet? If so is there any chance of seeing it painted?

I'm early in the process of building the Wasp kit except I intend to have it as the HMS Peacock. I intend to use this fantastic model for a cutting out scenario I'm pulling together using Sharp Practice rules. Since my scenario is based in Spain with Royal Marines & sailors stealing a captured prize back from the French, this model isn't historically correct but it looks so unbelievably cool that its what I'm going to use. So now I need paint schemes to match.

She is not painted yet. I want to do something more extensive with the rigging and haven't gotten the pieces I need to do that yet. I'm also need to do a little research on what the colors should be. I think I need a black hull with a yellow strip along the gunport line and the red on the inside of the hull. Masts and yardarms in white.
