I like this report. There is an order of battle for Krasnoi in Digby Smith's Napoleonic Data Book. He lists regiments but not battalions or numbers. What did you do about calculating the numbers for the French?

Hi all,

Thanks for the link to my blog, Armand.

I've made this scenario and others about the Retreat's battles. Several of them are available in French wargaming magazine Vae Victis, some others are/will be on my blog later. Please note my last entries are now partly in English and I'll try to do the same for the next ones.

About the Krasnoïe scenario I've build the OB using informations found in many sources (several books and a lot of Memoires in French language easily available on the Gallica website) but they are mainly conjonctural. It is obviously very difficult to state precisely how many battalions were present at the moment. Looking at different Memoires you can see that the army was in a rather bad shape but it also gathered reinforcements almost every day (rgts de marche, various detachments and garrison troops picked up from small or big towns all along the road to Moscow).
For example Claparede's Legion de la Vistule has almost the same number of men at Krasnoie than in Moscow because several 3rd battalions joined in Smolensk. Several full battalions also joined the Young Guard there, etc.

So I took all the 'real' informations I could find and made some conjonctural choices for the rest. Basically I've counted 1 battalion for each 4 to 500 men as it was rather common to merge small units together to make an effective one in battle.

Am I clear with my distorted English ? :)

Love the look of the games on your blog, with all that space for the armies to manouvre in.
