Ok, first off, I quit 40k over 10 years ago and swore I'd never come back (yes, I'm one of those).

This year my nephew asked for the starter 40k set so I bought it for him and even painted up two squads of scout marines for him!

Back on topic. While looking at Haasselfree's minis page I came across the Grymn sci-fi Dwarves. I use to love Squats so much that these got me re-interested in playing some as Imperial Guard during the Horus Heresy.

Question is, is anyone else still playing Squats in 40k and what minis are you using?

Cheers.

ive got a few squats, they are for my Inquisitorial / starchild warband. Ive lots of grymm that use either Guard or Sm stats depending on how i feel.

I know some people who use Mantic's Space Dwarves as Squats

Though technically not played as squats since no official squat rules exist for now, either space marines or IG

Im not planning on playing competion games so no problem for me that they arent "officially" allowed. Im a solo gamer and may be playing some "friendlies' with he nephew once his armies are up & running.

Im assuming Bell of Lost Souls or Dakka has some unofficial rules for Squats?

If not, Ive still got the trusty old Rogue Trader on the shelf somewhere!

grymn are smaller and more proportioned than the GW squat . Still have mine . Use the Olley armies if you want traditional squats .

Thanks Ming. I dont mind that the Grymn are more proportional & less "Squat" than the original ones. They are just too cool to pass up.

U.K.

I have a large number of squats. They usually get pointed out as Imperial Guard. I'm looking for a decent Squats points list.

I've got a squad or so of them that get used in a game once in a while. Bob Olley's Scrunts had my head dancing with grandiose ideas for a while… but I was too slow and he sold off most of the range I wanted (and they've yet to resurface).

Cadian 7th18 Dec 2012 7:35 p.m. PST

I still have mine. I have not bought the mantic or scrunts. I combined them into my witchhunters when that list fitst came out. The warlord and hearthguard sub for IG command squad. The exoarmor are combat servitors, the ancestor is a mystic. The squads were shifted into IG platoons and the bikers became roughriders.
I don't play tournaments, but I did have fun at a shop in kalamazoo a few years back. My witchhunters are mostly RT models with the inquisition and sisters being the new bits. A youngun tried to get me kicked out for using nonGW models! The squats and old RT guard were not citadel models in his view….good thing I left the cadet commissar squad at home! wink

and they've yet to resurface

Don't despair, Jim. I saw them recently while doing random jumps through the manufacturer's index.

Sadly, I'm not much more useful than that. Given that I wasn't looking for them, I didn't register who was doing the selling.

Oh, lordy, fielding an IG army of Grymn as Squats?

Your wallet will grow arms and strangle you in the night!

(I have about a dozen of the models myself and LOVE them, and you DO get what you pay for, but they are expensive.)

I am in Epic Scale – link

I am currently building a Squat army for use in 40k.

If anyone has some squats to sell, please contact me via PM or
karl (underscore) e (underscore) paulsen athotmail.

As for the topic at hand, I'm using a mix of GW squats, Black Tree Design (formerly Harlequin) Space Dwarves and Mantic Forgefathers. The BTD space dwarves are pretty spot-on for the squat look, but the Mantic forgefathers are different.

As for the list, the current 6th edition rules allow for allies, and by mixing the Space Marine and Imperial guard lists, you can come up with a game-legal list that fairly accurately represents Squats in statline, weapons and armor.

It's a rather long writeup, but you can see my proposed army list units here (8 posts down):

Mostly it uses Space Marine scout, IG platoon and IG vet profiles along with Scout bikes, Terminators (as exo armor) and techmarines. For armor and ordinance, you have Rhinos, Land Raiders, and Thunderfire cannons (Thudd guns or forgefather Hailstorm cannons).

As an aside, ive noticed Old Crow AFVs run a bit small (25mm) for modern 28mm sci-fi miniatures. But, they would probably look perfect as Squat AFVs.

Crucible Orc28 Dec 2012 6:59 p.m. PST

I got my hands on quite a lot of Epic squats a few years ago. I quite enjoy them.

never seen a 28mm squat though, that is a few years before my time.
