Here's my WWI German army. 28mm scale. They're a mix of Renegade and Great War miniatures. They're "Late War," intended to represent the army at about the time of the 1918 Spring Offensive.

I initially intended to flock the bases, but I may leave them bare mud.

And, yes, I have a larger British army nearing completion.

Very nice figures and painting. I really like the texture you got on the bases. Care to share your technique?

ScottS10 Dec 2012 8:51 p.m. PST

Sure! It's quite simple – mix 1:1:1 static grass, mixed fine/medium model railroad ballast (gravel) and (brown) house paint. Just glop it on, it will cover anything…

I like the look of the bases; I'd leave them like they are.

Truly excellent army you have there! Love the vehicles, too.

Wow! Thats alot of Germans. What rules are you using?

Oddball10 Dec 2012 10:35 p.m. PST

They look great. Nice touch adding in the captured British tank.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone!

Lovely stuff, these. Makes me want to dig my own Great War Germans out of the lead pile!

Amazing figures! Over the top with them, quick! And having the bases mud-brown is a good choice for anything except very very early war IMO.

ComradeCommissar11 Dec 2012 9:00 a.m. PST

Wow. Really nice job there.

Really, really good stuff there. I need to get mine done.

Splendid looking army.

Very nice 1914 Renegade for me it is then…..you have just helped me decide.

Many thanks

ScottS18 Dec 2012 9:53 p.m. PST

They're a mix of Renegade and Great War.

All were ordered from Brigade Games, who were very helpful.

Nice, but give the bases a layer of drybrush or two. That will make the alot nicer. It will be well invested time.

Abwehrschlacht02 Jan 2013 3:51 a.m. PST

Very nice, but I think I would flock the bases, given that they are late war and a lot of the fighting was not on the muddy battlefields of previous years. Help break a few of those Great War myths…

The ground wasn't too badly smashed up in the battles of 1915 and during the Battle of the Somme the British soldiers advanced through nearly waist high grass, it wasn't until later in 1916 that the ground turned to mud due to rain. Same with Third Ypres in 1917.

North Star is doing some specials at the moment (January 2013) for late war British and Germans. Worth taking a look as there is more than 25% discount.

As to the presence of mud or not, this wasn't really related to early or late war so much as the degree to which an area had been fought over in the recent past. The British battlefields of 1915 were not too badly 'smashed up' but the Artois and Champagne campaigns fought between the French and Germans in 1915 produced 'smashed up' battlefields. Once a campaign stopped, the grass often grew back. The Somme battlefields looked very different in 1918 than in 1916. Whatever period of the war you are wargaming, you can always get away with either mud or grass on stands.

Impressive, most impressive…

archiduque04 Jan 2013 6:34 a.m. PST

Stunning unit!!

Abwehrschlacht04 Jan 2013 8:07 a.m. PST

Robert, you're correct, I was seeing it from an Anglo-centric POV and was over looking the Artois and Champagne campaigns. as you rightly say, grass would always grow back quickly anyway.
