Hi all, Santa has very generously promised to bring a couple of Star X-Wing core rules and some related surprises but I'm wondering have you guys any creative advice on space maps. I don't think commercially internet based products would get here in time so I'm hoping for some creative alternatives. I'm living in Alberta Canada and I'm new here so any local advise on material stores would be great
in older posts I've read that Walmart had some bargin material but they no longer seem to have large fabric supplies
Any help, as always, would be gratfully apprieciated Thank you |

Not sure about Canada but JoAnn Fabric has some black felt with glider that is first rate. Also some of the more 70s fabric would work. I went to Hobby Lobby and got felt 9 x 12 pieces that I mounted on Black foam board 18x12, and for about 12 bucks US have a nice small playing mat of 3 x 3 feet. Wargamers Vault has the PDF file for the "not the Death Star" surface that you can print out as well and I think it is under $10.00 USD or less. VR James Mattes |

I have a 6'x8' piece of heavy black felt with multi-colored sparkles I picked up at JoAnn Fabrics a few years ago. Pretty much the best space mat I've owned and I have several. |

I did mine myself with a bunch of fabric, some white, yellow and a little red and blue for variation, craft paint bottles, and some white, tan and I think a rust spray can to make nebulas, and with a bit of practice and an hour or so, made a pretty respectable star map. Some pictures from NASA helped for some out of the ordinary stars, and off I went. |

Grey Panda, have you tried asking on the mailing lists for the local gaming groups such as EWG or EDBAG? There maybe gamers who have second-hand mats (from Hotz and such) they want to sell. link link At least from a couple of years ago, I know the Walmart at Capilano in Edmonton still had a large fabrics section. I don't know if they have black fabric though. |

I got mine in a fabric store. Ask for bolts of cloth in a 'star/space' pattern. Cut to your dimensions! You can see mine here link

Thanks a bunch guys, all great ideas
I mentioned my posting to my wife earlier today and she's come clean about getting something in "fabric world"? here in Edmonton. Sounds like something to the effect of what Billiam mentioned. It was meant to be a surprise but she was afraid I'd go and get something else
@Xintao Would like to check out the those Death Star downloads too though
just for a little variety
@gregmita2 thanks for the links in the game clubs they'll come in handy in the future @richarDISNEY Really nice
If what the wife's got is half as good I'll be happy @vojvoda and laager50: Great looking stuff too..I'd like to try out the Wargamers Vault for the PDF @flicking wargamer: wow NASA photos: that sounds majorly impressive!! Thanks again everyone John
