Just starting to get into the series with my sons. My oldest is all about everything ACW or Modern (WWII-2020) weapons and tactics.

For the longest time I did not do anything post 1905, then did micro armour from WWII to the Cold War in Europe circ 1986.

I am much more comfortable doing moderns now and Vietnam is where I am starting but only have Jungle Rot 25mm Vietnam and have been giving serious thought to FOW Vietnam series.

I also play FUBAR but more for Star Wars.

So I guess the question is for FoF Vietnam to GWOT what would be my best options considering we will mostly do insurgence games and counter Terrorism not the First Gulf War with massive tanks bns.

I might use it for future ops type gaming but I think I will stick with a FUBAR modifaction for Star Wars.

I think FoF works best at 15mm scale but I have seen a lot of use at 25mm (True) scale.

Dynaman878907 Dec 2012 7:31 a.m. PST

I play it in 15mm and it works great.

I've been toying with using 6mm, but with CM instead of inch measurements. (all my Vietnam stuff is 6mm)

Martian Root Canal07 Dec 2012 7:37 a.m. PST

We're pretty much scale agnostic. We have folks playing in 3mm all the way to 54mm. It really depends on your collection, your available table space and your preferences. Most of the scenarios I have written used multiple scales during play testing.

Irish Marine07 Dec 2012 7:43 a.m. PST

I started in 28mm but I gave up and went to 20mm. There is too much out there in 20mm not to, plus all the die cast armor in 1/72 scale that is just too cool and you can use it right out of the box. I'm working on the Iraq war plus the Cold War gone Hot. The only moderns I'm keeping in 28mm is the Bush figures I don't need a lot for that mostly infantry.

Ambush Alley Games07 Dec 2012 7:43 a.m. PST

I play all 15mm and 20mm at the moment, with a heavy, heavy lean towards 20mm. Both scales work great, take up less space than 25mm and cost a little less, too. Both 15mm and 20mm have a LOT of choice in modern forces, too.

I've gotten a ton of use out of QRF, Rebel Mini, and Peter Pig 15mm figures/vehicles and just as much out of Elhiem 20mm infantry and S&S 20mm vehicles. I recommend the miniatures of all these companies HIGHLY. Great products and great people to do business with, each and every one.

Jim's got it right, though, in the end it comes down to whether or not you want to use your existing collection and then as to how much space you have and, most importantly, what you think looks good.

If you need any first hand input (from me as someone who plays the game, not as the guy who helped write it), feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail!

I hope you and your son have a ball with the rules!

Shawn.

I am planning on using it for 1/35th….

I'm in the process of putting together forces in 28mm for FOF.

It was viewing Empress Miniatures figures that attracted me to ultra modern in the first place, 28mm to me has some of the best models out there, but it doesn't have the depth of range of models that the other scales have.

But have a look at Empress, Eureka and Imprint.

whoa Mohamed07 Dec 2012 8:12 a.m. PST

I go 1/285th, 10mm and 20mm. By far the largest collection is in 1/285th which i have OIF/OEF Vietnam WW2 UK and GERM,10mm OEF and 20mm Vietnam..all for FonF or Ambush Valley.

PiersBrand07 Dec 2012 8:20 a.m. PST

Vietnam I do in 20mm… As ya can tell by the pics in the book!

Check out the new Elhiem Vietnam stuff and next year he is covering all forces listed in the book…

Mooseworks807 Dec 2012 8:25 a.m. PST

6mm & 15mm

nazrat07 Dec 2012 8:30 a.m. PST

20mm all the way! The selection is way better than any other scale and prices are much lower than 28 and about the same as 15s. YMMV.

vdal181207 Dec 2012 9:09 a.m. PST

We have played Tomorrows War in 15mm.

richarDISNEY07 Dec 2012 9:20 a.m. PST

I only play it in 28mm and it works great!

Pijlie07 Dec 2012 9:41 a.m. PST

20mm for Tomorrows War is the way to go for me!

Ron W DuBray07 Dec 2012 9:45 a.m. PST

I have found it hard to find fairly priced modern military vehicles in 28mm but the troop minis are nice.

Seeing you can get 3 civilian cars for $12 USD but a humveee cast $28. USD

Shark Six Three Zero07 Dec 2012 9:51 a.m. PST

I use and collect 20mm moderns but I have to say those Rebel mini platoon packs make 15mm very attractive. If I had to do it all over again I would go 15mm.

Oddball07 Dec 2012 10:04 a.m. PST

I've used it mostly for 28mm, but as all my W.W. II stuff is 20mm, that's the scale I use for that period.

We make up the stats for W.W. II.

Generalstoner4907 Dec 2012 10:08 a.m. PST

28mm for me, the only pain are the lack of some nations vehicles butthat is slowly be fixed through several great companies recent offers.

I have to say though, if I had my way again I would probably go back and do it in 20mm due to the space saving issues you find with multiple 28mm ranges I possess.

Dennis030207 Dec 2012 10:23 a.m. PST

I use 15mm from Flashpoint (by way of Chesapeake Miniatures)for Vietnam and Eliem in 20mm for post Vietnam. Both work really well with Force on Force

Gaz004507 Dec 2012 10:24 a.m. PST

It's 20mm for me -tempted to dabble with my 6mm forces too….

(If I was to start over (god forbid!) then I would go with 15mm for space and storage reasons……..)

Ken Portner07 Dec 2012 10:30 a.m. PST

20mm.

15mm feels to small to me for individually based figures and 28mm is more expensive for not much more detail.

klepley07 Dec 2012 10:50 a.m. PST

James, James, James….you know the only scale to use is 25mm… Of course I am saying that because Jim and I have way too much invested for any other scale for moderns… FOF is great for smaller actions and having a four man team of the good guys, versus the bad guys who often regenerate makes 25mm look good on the table.. that being said, if I was starting now would more than likely go with 20mm….

Lion in the Stars07 Dec 2012 11:20 a.m. PST

15mm, because I already had a lot of minis and some terrain in 15mm from Flames of War.

vojvoda07 Dec 2012 1:03 p.m. PST

Wow guys I did not think 20mm was sooo popular. Will have to look around at what is out there.

@ klepley,

I bet you two do! Say hello to the guys for me. I am torn between 25mm and 15mm but with all the recommendations of 20mm I am going to have to rethink my approach.

FWIW I just scored six of the FoF modules off TMP today. Got the base rules around Thanksgiving and my sons and I have been reading through them.

I play in 15mm purely as a concession to the fact that I live in a condo and don't have a ton of storage space. I can still set up a 6x4 table, though, and we play our games with the ranges and measurements listed in the book. I think for modern games, the smaller the figures, the better the ranges look.

pzivh43 Supporting Member of TMP07 Dec 2012 5:19 p.m. PST

James,

I have a bunch of 15mm for FOW. But a friend (Mike Bryne) has 28mm and I am tempted! It's the terrain that's holding me back!

Dances with Clydesdales09 Dec 2012 12:58 p.m. PST

I use 28mm exclusively at the moment for FoF. I tend towards small games, so I don't need lots of figures. I have considered 6mm since I already have quite a few. Terrain for 28mm is an issue, but I'm working on building some of my own.

vojvoda10 Dec 2012 7:59 a.m. PST

Mike Terrain should not be much of an issue. Sand, dumppy building, Jungle should pretty much cover almost everywhere.
At least that is what I remember from the day.

20mm is the best. small enough so terrain can be more interesting yet large enough that individually based figures work well (I know some base 15s individually…just doesn't work for me).

flicking wargamer11 Dec 2012 8:57 a.m. PST

20mm. Cost works better for me there, there is endless variety and plenty of figures available.

vojvoda13 Dec 2012 9:19 a.m. PST

Wow I just discovered these Elhiem Figures

elhiemfigures.com/site_map.html

Seem like the perfect fit for FoF. How come none of you guys told me about these?
