Ah, the Foundry Gendarmes, Perry sculpts. Can't get enough of'em. Still No. 1 after all these years.

Condottiere06 Dec 2012 4:46 p.m. PST

Eureka aren't bad either--at least they have more horse variations/poses.

But, Foundry seem to be the "gold standard."

Matheo06 Dec 2012 7:01 p.m. PST

Don't get me wrong, I really like Eureka's variety and the fact that there's more than one barded warhorse in the range (plus the Ordonnance Archers – I think those are still the only ones in the market, unless someone wants to convert Perry plastics. For some people Redoubt's MAA might be good enough too).
But I just love the Foundry miniatures' bulk. Both look good enough in separate units, but put side to side Foundry wins imho.

Lovely work.

And Eureka gave far more variety among the gendarmes, especially with the multiple plume and weapons options, as well as right arm pose, etc., etc. their proportions are more realistic than Foundry, but I have to admit that the bulkiness of the foundry gendarmes make them appear more imposing.

Matheo07 Dec 2012 7:01 a.m. PST

The bottom line being – one just have to have both, anyways :D

Condottiere07 Dec 2012 9:28 a.m. PST

You're right--and I do! 36 Foundry, 24 Eureka, and 30 Eureka lesser gendarmes/archers. Man, I have a lot of painting ahead of me. Just wonder if I'll get them all done before I expire! Or worse yet, someone comes out with even better gendarmes!!!

Matheo07 Dec 2012 9:47 a.m. PST

Pro Gloria announced batch of Gendarmes (afaik 6 different horses to go with them) in mid-2013… ;)

idontbelieveit07 Dec 2012 9:47 a.m. PST

the Foundry riders are nice, but the horses are crap

Fantastic looking figures, really impressive!

I like the Foundry horses.

A shame there are so few poses though, to make a proper unit look good.

Just one barded horse takes a LOT out of the quality of Foundry units – though you can get some of their WOTR horses to mix them up with the odd old-fashioned barding. You can also mix them with the new Perry plastic horses, which will be my project for this winter (redoing my Foundry Gensdarmes). What I also like about the Foundries is that there are characters among the mercenary knighs that work perfect as mounted leaders for the Landsknechts. Sadly most of their new Condottiere-range are unusable.

Eurekas miniatures are of much better casting quality and look imho better as single minaitures, but suffer from being 10-20% too small when compared to most others. These are more in the 25-28mm range then 28-32 of all others. Still, the variety and character you can achieve with the metals are worth to get a unit or two.

For the lighter units the Eurekas, Perry and TAG mix pretty well (no Venexia minis here, sadly – yet) for mounted crossbows, genitors or stradiots.

Looking at the link given by Armand there are a lot of other units, especially the Foundry and Artizan landsknechts. Nice work!!

Agree with changing horses from other companies.
Those riders are quite good.

I've found Perry plastic horses way too big when compared with others, but that might be just my take. I feel that Warlord Games plastic ones are more in line with TAG/Foundry/OG (and certainly smaller Eureka), though purists will have to adjust their tack accordingly (Warlord's are for XVII century). Also, no barding on those :( Hopefully one day TAG will make barded renaissance horses. Maybe those Pro Gloria will do the trick, although not sure if Stephen will sell them separately.

Wow, they're lovely, really colourful. I do have a softspot for the WF/Perry Gendarmes though the single caparisoned horse is a shame.

I've mixed the latest Perry plastics with these and they work OK, here's a group en masse;

As for horse armour, with a scalpel and a bit of green stuff you can make renaissance barding yourself from that boxed set, here are some of my efforts;

These were relatively easy conversions, just a bit of patience really, there's more comment on my blog;
