Here I am 48 and I get the urge to start playing 40k. With a couple of guys at the club of a similar disposition were putting some stuff together and going retro
. and might I add having a damn good time of it too ( My personal favourites are Death guard for Horus heresy ). Weve had a few games and getting into the swing. For you players out there who dabble in this is there a forum or similar that we can pose any questions regarding the rules or codex related queries to ? Between us we have all the books and cards etc, so just somewhere to bounce ideas and questions off. On from this, one question for anyone that can help ! A figure with 1 attack can have two attacks if it is armed with 2 close combat weapons ( 1 extra dice for 2nd weapon ). If I have read this right, what happens if for instance a marine Captain who has 3 attacks is armed with say a power fist and chainsaw ? does he egt 4 attacks and which weapon stats does he use to work out attacks, one or a combination of both. Greatful for all help given, now back to medication. |

You get 4 attacks (1 extra attack for the second weapon, page 41 of the rulebook) and you can use the power fist strength for any throws to damage (page 42 of the rulebook "A model armed with 2 close combat weapons is free to use either or both of his weapons to strike blows against his opponent. It is assumed that warriors will fight sensibly by feinting with their worst weapon while striking with their best weapon"). Hope this helps. |

I think it was changed later so that half would wound from weapon A and half from weapon B but I'm pretty certain that was for a later edition. |

Then it changed again so that certain weapons struck last (power fists, and a host of others) and that you didn't get an extra attack unless you had paired weapons of the same type. |

thanks for that quick response. missed that bit on page 42. sounds good enough for me. weve really been quite pleased with the rules, a lot simpler and more of that skirmishy feel about them that I was looking for. Weve also managed to get hold of some copies of Rogue trader so well be giving that an outing too. |

4 attacks that you can choose which weapons to wound with as mrausten said. Changes only came later in Necromunda and later editions so don't apply to 2nd Ed. A couple of 2nd Edition forum options out there to try: WH40K 2nd Ed Yahoo Group. Not sure how active it is for answers to questions but lots of good resources there. link Eastern Fringe forum has a 2nd Ed section. link WargamerAU Forums has a 2nd Ed section. link I'm sure there are plenty more out there. |

I have often considered going retro myself but then there is the issue trying to find all the cards, codexes, etc. In many ways Dark Millennium was a more fun game but lead to uber uber characters and things like the dread vortex grenade. My group long ago banned the Plague Grenade. But I do fondly remember some fun games with 2d edition and back then when I greater demon appeared on the table it was something to be concerned about. Now it seems a couple of good lazcannon hits and it is just some much ectoplasm. Enjoy you games and have fun. PS. And oh yea having a chain ax meant something as well for my Khorne Berserkers. |

Having a chainaxe STILL mans something for Khorne Berzerkers. Damon. |

I don't think 2nd edition is terribly out of reach. Over the course of a year or so I managed to find all the rulebooks and codexes for an average of 5 bucks each. Dark Millenium is probably the hardest to find (already had an orgiginal copy), but it's possible. Then I tried to play 2nd edition at the club and realized why I don't play it anymore. Clunky! It still felt like a mass battle game using warband skirimsh rules. Still, the books are great sources of nostalgia, art and fluff. |

Ah, the Vortex Grenade. One card from the boxed set, one from Dark Millenium. Add both to an Eldar Exarch with Crack Shot and Rapid(?) Shot and equipped with a Warp Spider Generator, it was concievable to pop both Vortex Grenades into the enemy deployment zone on the first turn
Good times

It still felt like a mass battle game using warband skirimsh rules. Wasn't it still pretty much aimed at smaller forces, ala Rogue Trader? Despite the growing size of the forces people were trying to use and the photos in White Dwarf
it seems 20+ figures on a side would be verging on too big for my tastes. |

Used to enjoy it. We banned level 3 powers and used very little wargear. The games averaged 90-120 minutes including set up and strike down. Force sizes varied by list, a horde approached 100 models while a marine list was 30/40. |

Just use the box set rules (rules book, codex book, wargear book) and 'Dark Millenium'. No codexes needed. Make photocopies of the wargear and vehicle cards and add them to the army-lists. Better yet, don't even use Dark Millenium ,except the additional vehicle and wargear cards. a far superior game to 40K 3.0/3.1/3.2/3.35/etc
etc..etc.. |

How to deal with models using weapons that you cant get miniatures for anymore? Multimelta imperial guard etc.? |

There is a 43page PDF of all wargear cards floating around. I refuse to abuse my nice codexes to remove the cards of fold them back to copy them. |

I remember 2nd ed. as the worst version of 40K
it tried to be the "battle game" 3rd edition turned out to be while being even more fiddly than the "skirmish game" Rogue Trader was. I'd happily play RT or 3rd edition any day, but I'd probably balk at a game of 2nd edition. Especially if Dark Millennium was in the mix. |

"My personal favourites are Death guard for Horus heresy" Horus Heresy is my favorite period too. After 10 years since I played my last 40k game Im painting somepre-heresy World Eaters right now. |
